In an address, later broadcasted by the Vatican Radio in many languages, the Pope stressed the Church’s “understanding of the world of labor.” He exhorted Catholic workers to become apostles of the Church’s social teachings, to be alert to un-Christian influences among their own ranks, and to fight against temptations to become lax in practicing their faith. - Description

With them is the royal couple’s daughter, Princess Benedikte (left). The historic and ecumenical visit marked the first time in more than 40 years that a monarch from predominantly Lutheran Denmark has been received by a Pope. Paul VI gave the King a copy of the code of Ambrosiaster (the name given to the author of a commentary on all the Epistles of St. Paul), medals of his pontificate, and an autographed, silver-framed photograph of himself. The pontiff told the royal visitors in English that the audience was an “historic event” which “touches us deeply.” In his remarks to the pontiff, King Frederik cited the cordial relations between Catholics and Protestants in his country. In Naples the crate, weighing a total of about six tons, was to be fastened to the deck of the Cristoforo Colombo for its ocean voyage. Insured for $6,000,000, the statue of the Virgin and the Crucified Christ, was packed with asbestos and plastic materials in a wooden crate. The inner box was then placed in an outer steel case. It was addressed to Francis Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of New York, president of the Vatican Pavilion where the famous work of art will be viewed by millions. The trip marks the first time the statue left its permanent place in St. Peter’s in more than 450 years. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (K-4B-64-NAB)

ANDREW RELIC RETURNED TO ORTHODOX VATICAN CITY -- Pope Paul VI sits before altar holding a gold reliquary containing the famed relic of St. Andrew the Apostle during ceremonies in St. Peter's Basilica before its return to the Orthodox Church in Greece. On either side of the pontiff are some of the 2, 300 Fathers of the Vatican Council who participated in the services. Flown to Greece, the relic -- skull of the Apostle -- was escorted by a delegation headed by Augustin Cardinal Bea, president of the Vatican Secretariat for Promoting Christian Unity. On its arrival, the relic and its escorts received a warm welcome from Metropolitan Constantine of Patras, in whose diocesan cathedral the skull will be enshrined. After some 500 years in the St. Peter's grottoes, the relic was returned to the Orthodox by the Pope as a gesture of "brotherly love." Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (A-9E-64-NAB)

VATICAN CITY -- Concelebrants of the Latin Rite Mass in St. Peter's Basilica opening the Vatican Council's third session partake of the consecrated wine with a spoon from the chalice, as Pope Paul VI stands by praying. The pontiff alone drank the wine directly from the chalice. In addition to the Pope, 24 prelates concelebrated the Mass. These included three cardinals, 15 archbishops -- two of whom were Africans; four bishops and two heads of religious orders.
