Dr. Johannes Blauw of Hilversum, Holland, (left photo) who headed an exploratory committee for the new literature plan, addresses the group of some 200 Protes-tant and Orthodox churchmen attending the Commission sessions. The meeting also featured several workshops on various phases on missions and evangelism. Dr. Kathleen Bliss (right), head of the WCC’s Division of Ecumenical Action and the Board of Education of the Church of England, leads a group discussing the Christian approach to intellectuals. Kohler reads the Scripture lesson during services dedicating Christ Church in Moscow -- the first Protestant chapel to be established for the English-speaking community in the Russian city. Pastor of the new church is the Rev. Donald V. Roberts, a United Presbyterian clergyman from Tonawanda, N.Y., who has been a chaplain in Moscow since 1962 under a special Moscow Ministry Project of the National Council of Churches. The chapel, which can seat about 75, is located in one room of the apartment occupied by the Roberts family. A similar arrangement exists for Roman Catholics in the Moscow foreign colony. - Text transcribed from caption: P-31760 EUROPEAN CHURCHMEN MEET ABOARD SHIP ABOARD THE BORNHOLM -- Leading participants of the European Conference of Churches gather informally between sessions of the organization’s fourth meeting held aboard the privately-owned Danish ship, Bornholm, cruising in the international waters between Denmark and Sweden. The meeting was held on the vessel to permit East German delegates to attend, as Communist authorities refused them allied travel permits to enter Denmark. The meeting drew some 250 representatives of nearly all Protestant, Anglican, Orthodox and Old Catholic Churches in 21 European countries. Major actions of the delegates included adoption of a constitution and election of a five-man Presidium, a 15-member advisory committee and a secretariat. - Text transcribed from caption: P-31761 ECUMENICITY ABOARD SHIP ABOARD THE BORNHOLM -- The World Council of Churches’ ecumenical emblem is affixed on the privately-owned Danish vessel, the Bornholm, where some 250 delegates from most Protestant, Anglican, Orthodox and Old Catholic Churches in Europe met to adopt a constitution for the European Conference of Churches. Although autonomous, the Conference is closely related to the WCC in the common effort to promote Christian unity and service. The ship-board meeting made possible participation of East German delegates who had been denied travel permits by Communist authorities to visit Denmark where sessions were to be held. - Text transcribed from caption: P-31664 EUROPEAN CHURCHMEN HOLD SHIPBOARD CONFERENCE COPENHAGEN, Denmark -- Some 200 European churchmen boarded the Danish vessel Bornholm at Copenhagen and convened a meeting of the Conference of European Churches as the ship sailed in the Baltic Sea. The meeting was held on the ship to permit participation by a 15-member delegation from East Germany. The Danish Government refused permission for the delegation to enter the country without Western allied travel documents for which East German authorities would not let them apply. Protestant, Anglican, Orthodox and Old Catholic representatives from nearly all European countries attended the conference. Roman Catholic observers also took part. - Text transcribed from caption: P-31649 REFRESHMENT STAND FOR REFUGEES GARO HILLS, India -- Refugees entering a new settlement area in the Garo Hills region of India for refreshments at a roadside stand. The World Council of Churches has appealed to its member denominations for $60,000 to help the National Christian Council of India aid thousands of refugees in the area.
