- Pope visits prison, says Mass.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30854 POPE VISITS PRISON, SAYS MASS ROME -- Pope Paul VI speaks to about 1,200 inmates on a visit to Regina Coeli (Queen of Heaven) prison in Rome where he celebrated a Mass for them. Some prisoners kneel near the Pope as he talks, while others look down from corridors overlooking the jail’s rotunda. The pontiff was warmly greeted and applauded by the prisoners, many of whom wept. He told them: “You want freedom, welfare, and I feel powerless to give you these things you want so much.” The inmates later joined the Pope in reciting the Our Father and the Hail Mary. Pope Paul repeatedly blessed the prisoners around him and before leaving distributed gifts to all. He was the second pontiff to visit the penal institution which includes men convicted of manslaughter, armed robbery and kidnapping. The first Pope to visit the jail was the late John XXIII in 1958. The pontiff disclosed that among questions discussed in his encyclical will be peace and the relationship between Christian and economic life. He said it also will deal with the "dialogue of the Church with the world of the non-Christian religions and with the choir of the Christian Churches still separated from the Catholic Church." The encyclical would not contain specific theological or doctrinal points, he said, and will be of an "exhortative" nature. It will be called Ecclesiam Suam (His Church) and be dated Aug. 6, the Feast of the Transfiguration of Christ. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (U-8A-64-NAB)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31401 POPE TAKES FIRST HELICOPTER FLIGHT CASTEL GANDOLFO, Italy -- With his safety belt secured, a smiling Pope Paul VI waves good-bye from a helicopter before a 75-mile flight from Castel Gandolfo to the medieval city of Orvieto. Landing on a site about two miles from the town, the Pope motored to the ancient Orvieto Cathedral as crowds lining the streets shouted greetings. At the cathedral the Pope celebrated a Mass and delivered a brief homily on man's need for spiritual and material welfare. The service marked the 700th anniversary of the Feastday of Corpus Christi, established throughout the worldwide Church by the Pope Urban IV in a bull dated Sept. 8, 1264. The Pope's helicopter flight was the first ever taken by a pontiff. Last January Paul VI became the first Pope to use an airplane when he visited the Holy Land. The first to end the Popes’ self-imposed Vatican confinement after the invasion of the papal territory in 1870 was Pius XII, who paid a state visit to the King of Italy in December, 1939. The pontiff had celebrated a Christmas morning Mass at the humble church on the outskirts of the city. Earlier, at a traditional Mass for diplomats in the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel, the Pope stressed the need for peace. He emphasized this theme at Pietralata and later when addressing the throngs in St. Peter’s Square. On Christmas Day, Pope Paul also visited 300 crippled children. He also publishes a news bulletin on Council developments for the press and U.S. hierarchy. A native of Ohio and a University of Notre Dame alumnus, Father Heston has been in Rome for 16 years. He is associated with the international headquarters of the Congregation of the Holy Cross.
