- Description

Mueller of Indianapolis, Ind., president of the National Council of Churches, as he viewed the barricade (top photo) during a Holy Week visit to U.S. military personnel in Spain and Germany. In addition to bringing greetings from hometown churches to servicemen and women, the Evangelical United Brethren Church leader met with government and religious leaders in Germany and preached at an ecumenical service at West Berlin’s Kaiser Friedrich Memorial church (bottom photo). In his sermon he said it was his desire, and that of the U.S. government, that he spend Good Friday through Easter in Berlin because the city “with its wall and problems is for all of Christianity the City of Good Friday.” He declared: “Whoever shares concern about mankind’s future must share Berlin’s concerns.” The American churchman was welcomed to Germany by Bishop Otto Dibelius of the Evangelical Church of Berlin-Brandenburg (seated right, bottom photo). - A sermon in lights.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-32232 A SERMON IN LIGHTS ESSEN, Germany -- News of the Church is flashed in lights for Catholics of Essen, Germany. First installation of its type by a church, the moving messages are similar to news bulletins carried on the old New York Times building in New York. During the course of the day passersby watch sermons-in-capsule, Biblical quotations, and Church news move across the top of a building. Bishop Franz Hengsbach of Essen authorized the unusual project. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (P-NY-3A-65-W)

Carmelites, they are shown in their chapel at the site of the infamous “death” camp maintained by the Nazis at Dachau, Germany. The grounds have been converted into Holy Blood Convent, which was dedicated by Bishop Johannes Neuhausler. The German prelate was an inmate of Dachau for most of the 12-year-regime of Adolf Hitler. - Berlin's Dom.
- Description
- Text transcribed from captions on reverse: The heavily damaged Dom, Berlin’s Protestant Cathedral, where the Kaisers attended divine worship before World War I. This church was vandalized for 8 days following the occupation of Berlin. Most of the tombs of former German emperors and princes desecrated. At the right can be seen the towering St. Mary’s Church, one of the oldest sanctuaries in Brandenburg Provinces, and one of the mostly lightly [sic] damaged of the Berlin churches. Provost Heinrich Grueber, who is Protestant Counsellor in the Berlin City Government, is pastor of St. Mary’s. Domprediger Dr. ____Doehring standing amid the ruins of the Dom, Berlin’s Protestant Cathedral. Dr. Doehring, who is still active in German church affairs, was the Kaisers’ pastor before World War I. During the Nazi regime he resisted efforts of the Hitlerites to “Nazify” the Christian Church. Services of the Dom parish are now held in a hall, as are most of church services in Berlin.
