- Text transcribed from caption: P-30335 NEW NCC PRESIDENT RECEIVES GAVEL PHILADELPHIA -- Senior Bishop Reuben H. Mueller of the Evangelical United Brethren Church, right, new president of the National Council of Churches, is congratulated after receiving the presidential gavel from J. Irwin Miller of Columbus, Ind., outgoing NCC head. Bishop Mueller, who comes from Indianapolis, Ind., was elected to the National Council post at its triennial General Assembly in Philadelphia. As NCC president, he heads the largest non-Catholic church organization in this country, representing 31 Protestant and Orthodox bodies with more than 40,000,000 members. - Text transcribed from caption: PC-30732 DIALOGUE AND A GIFT PHILADELPHIA -- Roman Catholic and Methodist leaders of Philadelphia in an ecumenical dialogue. Here Archbishop John J. Krol, left, presents to Methodist Bishop Fred Pierce Corson a memento of the Second Vatican Council. The gift, a medal presented to the Catholic prelate by Pope Paul VI, was made as the two churchmen completed a half-hour discussion on a Philadelphia TV station. It was their second televised dialogue within a year. Archbishop Krol is an undersecretary of the Council, while Bishop Corson, president of the World Methodist Council, attended the first and second sessions as a delegate-observer. These youngsters, white and Negro, learn together, with Rector Thomas Logan getting a big smile out of all of them. Mr. Logan, formerly at St. Michael’s and All Angels Church, has raised Calvary from chapel status to that of an independent church. His present congregation is 90 per cent Negro, ten per cent white. - Text transcribed from caption: INTERRACIAL CHURCH #1663 PHILADELPHIA -- To a full congregation of both whites and Negroes, Rector Thomas Logan of Calvary Protestant Episcopal Church here describes the form of the service just completed. Calvary formerly was predominantly white, but a population shift cut its weekly Sunday attendance to about 25. It then was merged with St. Michael’s and All Angels Church, with Mr. Logan moving his congregation to Calvary in September 1945. Average Sunday attendance now is 250.
