- Charred Cross -- symbol of reconciliation.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30864 CHARRED CROSS -- SYMBOL OF RECONCILIATION NEW YORK -- In solemn services in the Music Garden at the rear of the Protestant and Orthodox Center at the New York World’s Fair, the famed Charred Cross of Coventry Cathedral in England was dedicated as a reminder of the Christian message of reconciliation. Made from two charred oak beams that fell from the roof of the cathedral as it was destroyed in a 9140 German bombing raid, the Cross and the adjoining inscription, “Father Forgive,” will be on exhibit at the pavilion for the two years of the Fair. Dr. H.C.N. Williams (at far left), provost of Coventry Cathedral, presented the cross and a smaller Cross of Nails, made from 14th-century hand-forged nails, as symbols of the Christian message that “crucifixion must always be followed by resurrection.” Others taking part in the service (from left to right) were: Dr. James W. Kennedy, rector of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, New York, and chairman of the committee of the U.S. Conference for the World Council of Churches which arranged for display of the Cross; Dr. Arthur Lee Kinsolving, rector of St. James Episcopal church, New York, and president of the Protestant Council of the City of New York, sponsor of the world’s fair pavilion; Dr. Cynthia C. Wedel of New York, assistant general secretary for program, National Council of Churches; Greek Orthodox Archdeacon Polycarp; Archbishop Iakovos, Primate of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of North and South America and a WCC president; Charles C. Parlin of New York, Methodist layman and a WCC president, and Protestant Episcopal Bishop Horace W.B. Donegan of New York. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BS-NY-4C-64-NBM)

Holding guidelines (right photo) from left to right are Edgar Tafel, architect who designed the chapel for the Protestant Council of the City of New York; R.L. Cowan, chairman of the airport chapel committee, and the Rev. William J. Boone, chaplain who has been developing a united Protestant ministry at the airport while the chapel has been under construction. Looking on is James G. Skinner, president of the building firm of Skinner & Cook. The chapel is being erected in the shape of a Latin cross at the edge of the airport lagoon. It will have a reception, office and counseling rooms, a library and 110-seat meditation chapel. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (PF-NY-6C-64-NBM)

- World's Fair Christian exhibits.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-29721 WORLD’S FAIR CHRISTIAN EXHIBITS NEW YORK -- Spires, towers, crosses, famous religious art objects, and light beams reaching skyward will project the Christian message to the 70 million people expected to visit the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair. Religious pavilions offering a wide variety of features will cover more than seven acres in the heart of the fair’s International and Industrial areas, space which has been provided rent-free. Architect’s rendering of the various pavilions are shown above. The Vatican Pavilion (top left) will be on an oval plot, surmounted by a lantern and cross and housing a 350-seat chapel. Also in the Roman Catholic pavilion will be the famed sculpture, “Pieta,” (center) created by Michelangelo in 1499, which the late Pope John XXIII agreed to send to the fair for display. The Protestant Center (top right) will be a united Christian display proclaiming the theme, “Jesus Christ, the Light of the World,” with an exhibit pavilion behind a Court of Protestant Pioneers, pillars dedicated to Christian leaders surrounding an elevated, illuminated cross. The center is sponsored by the Protestant Council of the City of New York, with several denominations participating. The main spire of the pavilion of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) (center left) will reach upward 127 feet and be crowned by a statue of the Angel Moroni. The structure is a replica of the famed Salt Lake City Temple. The Billy Graham Pavilion (center right) will be octagonal in shape and will incorporate a 500-seat theater, 150-seat chapel, counseling rooms, a lounge and offices. The Christian Science Pavilion (bottom left) will rise 35 feet in the shape of a seven-pointed star and will be topped by a diamond-shaped “sky dome” which will throw a shaft of light into the sky. The building will be surrounded by 14 illuminated fountains and an aluminum and glass reading room will be nearby. Films produced by the Moody Institute of Science, showing the harmony between science and religion, will be shown in the Sermons from Science Pavilion (bottom right), an exhibit sponsored by the Christian Life Convention of New York City. In the pavilion’s 500-seat circular theater, film narration and demonstrations will be in six languages, with translations available through earphones.
