- Pope welcomes Orthodox delegates.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-32155 POPE WELCOMES ORTHODOX DELEGATES VATICAN CITY -- Pope Paul VI chats with Metropolitan Meliton of Heliopolis, one of two representatives of Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras of Istanbul received by the pontiff in a private talk. The other Eastern Orthodox leader was Metropolitan Chrysostom of Hydra, secretary of the Third Pan-Orthodox Conference held at Rhodes, Greece, last November. Metropolitan Meliton presided over the conference. Greeting the two Orthodox delegates as “dear brothers in Christ,” the Pope said their meeting was a “profoundly happy event.” The Rhodes conference authorized individual Orthodox Churches to continue exploration with the Catholic Church on means for establishing closer relations. It voted, however, to postpone any collective approach to Rome for unity talks until the end of the Vatican Council. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (U-2C-65-NAB)
