- Cardinal's efforts for Israel disclosed.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31005 CARDINAL’S EFFORTS FOR ISRAEL DISCLOSED NEW YORK -- For the first time it was revealed that Francis Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of New York (left), had a part in the admission of Israel to the United Nations in 1949. The disclosure was made by Charles H. Silver, president of Beth Israel Hospital (right), in introducing the cardinal at the hospital’s 75th anniversary dinner. With them is Mayor Robert F. Wagner. Mr. Silver reported that Cardinal Spellman contacted a number of South American countries in support of Israel’s entry into the U. N. These contacts, Mr. Silver said, were instrumental in the General Assembly approving the new nation’s membership. He added that the prelate’s assistance made “one of the most amazing stories of brotherhood and fellowship among men of good will.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BB-NY-5C-64-NAB)

- The eyes are ecumenical.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-31045 THE EYES ARE ECUMENICAL WALNUT CREEK, Cal. -- A Roman Catholic optometrist smiles as he watches hundreds of old eyeglasses, frames and lenses added to a growing pile destined for the Presbyterian Eye Clinic at Taegu, Korea. Head of the project, “Eyes for Korea,” is Dr. George Hurd, far left; helping the campaign, left to right, are Dr. Kan of Oakland, Cal., president of a two-country optometric society; and Mrs. Ross Griffin and Mrs. James Crosby of regional women’s groups. A Presbyterian patient, Mrs. Elsie Exner of Walnut Creek, Cal., started the campaign rolling when she mentioned to Dr. Hurd the need of the Korean eye clinic for old eyeglasses. He enlisted opticians and optometrists over a wide area, and in a short time 15,000 sets of usable, old glasses were contributed. Manufacturers contributed 500 new frames. All are consigned to Dr. Howard Moffett, chief of the Presbyterian Medical Center at Taegu. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (AKM-WC-5D-64-W)

- Pentecost poster stresses church unity.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30782 PENTECOST POSTER STRESSES CHURCH UNITY NEW YORK -- This Pentecost poster, stressing the theme, “Unity in Diversity,” is being distributed by the World Council of Churches, which has a membership of 209 Protestant, Anglican and Orthodox bodies in 200 countries. Protestant and Anglican churches observe Pentecost on May 17, and Orthodox on June 21. In a message to be read in many languages in WCC member churches, the World Council called on Christians to rediscover their unity through deeper study of the Bible, “whether this be done individually or together.” Pentecost marks the descent of the Holy Ghost on the Disciples as they were gathered after His Resurrection. It is an occasion for emphasizing church unity and witness. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (WC-2D-64-NAB)

- Famed architect's last work.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-31107 FAMED ARCHITECT’S LAST WORK COLUMBUS, Ind. -- North Christian church in Columbus, Ind., a congregation of the Christian Churches (Disciples of Christ), was designed by the famed architect, Eero Saarinen, to be “a prototype of 20th century Christianity.” The structure -- the last designed by Mr. Saarinen before he died in 1961 -- is hexagon-shaped, to represent the Star of David, a symbolic reminder of Judaism as the foundation of Christianity. A gold-leafed cross tops a 192-foot slender spire and the bowl-shaped sanctuary with Lord’s Table in the center, seat 615. The church’s architecture committee, headed by J. Irwin Miller, immediate past president of the National Council of Churches, discussed theological implications of church designs for a full year before it interviewed architects and selected Mr. Saarinen.
