- Adolphus Clemens Good Papers
- Description
-
Adolphus Clemens Good was appointed in 1882 by the Board of Foreign Missions to the West Africa Mission of the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. Initially assigned to the Baraka Station, he was transferred to the Ogowe River area in 1884 and spent the bulk of his career there. In addition to his work as a teacher and evangelist, Dr. Good studied bird and animal life in the Ogowe Valley and in the Cameroon, as well as the ethnology and religious beliefs of various West African tribes. He also prepared a text on Bulu grammar which was published posthumously. Consists of Dr. Good's journals and notes, his papers on the religious beliefs of the Gabwa and the role of women among the Bulu, and miscellaneous Bulu language items. The collection also contains various personal items, including letters sent to his widow, Lydia B. Walker Good. View the collection guide to learn more. - Song After Sorrow, 1938, part 2.
- Description
- "Song After Sorrow" (1938) was a dramatized documentary of the Presbyterian Church in the U.S. Congo Mission work among lepers at Bibanga. Virginia and Ray Garner, of the Africa Motion Picture Project, arrived at Bibanga in late 1938 just as Eugene Kellersberger was preparing to relocate the mission's leprosarium. A portion of the film depicts, as Virginia wrote in her diary of August 23, 1938, "homeless lepers en route [...] The ones without feet rode in carts, the women carried baskets on their heads, and the crippled hobbled along with sticks. It really was quite a scene and should be very effective." [Cf. Glenn Reynolds, "Images out of Africa : the Virginia Garner diaries of the Africa Motion Picture Project," 2011.] This is a 1990s transfer to VHS, likely provided to PHS-Montreat by the Medical Benevolence Foundation.

- William H. Sheppard Papers
- Description
-
William H. Sheppard was a Presbyterian minister and missionary to the Congo for the Presbyterian Church in the U.S. Executive Committee of Foreign Missions, 1890-1910. Sheppard was one of the earliest African-American foreign missionaries for the Presbyterian Church in the U.S. He and his wife, Lucy Gantt Sheppard, were stationed at Luebo and later at Ibanche. Collection consists primarily of photograph albums and photographs. Photographs document mission stations and churches at Luebo and Ibanche; the Sheppard family; other Presbyterian Church in the U.S. missionaries; and native people of the Bateke, Baluba, Bakuba, Zappo Zap, and other tribes. The collection includes a small number of papers, including correspondence; Sheppard's reminiscences of his time at the Stillman Institute in Tuscaloosa, Alabama; a pamphlet entitled "How Sheppard Made His Way into Lukenga's Kingdom"; printed materials about the Congo and King Leopold; hymnbooks in Tshiluba and an unidentified language; and glass and nitrate negatives. View the collection guide to learn more. The entire physical collection has been digitized.
