- New Anglican Archbishop of Capetown.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30580 NEW ANGLICAN ARCHBISHOP OF CAPETOWN CAPETOWN -- Bishop Robert Selby Taylor of Grahamstown, a 53-year-old, six-foot athletic clergyman, was elected Archbishop of Capetown, automatically becoming Metropolitan of the Anglican Church of the Province of South Africa. He succeeds Archbishop Joost de Blank, who retired because of ill health and has been named a canon of Westminster Abbey. Like Dr. de Blank, who gained worldwide attention for his out-spoken attacks on South Africa's apartheid policy, Archbishop Taylor is a staunch foe of racial segregation. A native of Yorkshire, Archbishop Taylor has headed the Grahamstown diocese since 1959. He is a former bishop of Northern Rhodesia and of Pretoria. He was elected archbishop by an assembly of clergy, laity and bishops which deliberated three days before agreeing on a successor to Dr. de Blank.
