- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30253 PRAYER FOR A BEREAVED COUNTRY WASHINGTON, D.C. -- To Dr. Frederick Brown Harris, retired Methodist clergyman, fell the task of offering a prayer before the U.S. Senate when news came of the shooting of the late President Kennedy in Dallas. An excerpt from his prayer: “Hold us, we pray, and the people of America, calm and steady and full of faith for the Republic in this tragic hour of our history. God save the state and empower her for whatever awaits for the great world role she has been called to fill in this time of destiny.” Dr. Harris, who said the President’s death marked a “great and tragic loss to the nation,” has been Senate chaplain for 15 years. Succeeding to the office of the Chief Executive upon the assassination of President Kennedy, Mr. Johnson is shown in a recent photograph taken at his office in the Capitol Building. A member of the International Convention of Christian Churches (Disciples of Christ), he has said that while the nation believes in separation of Church and State, there “is no separation between the men of the state and faith in God. The private unity of public men with their God in prayer is the enduring source of our unity…Godless nations may become powerful in the world…(but)…people do not prosper when their leaders are godless.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-NY-11E-63-W)
