- Text transcribed from caption: SAMUEL ALPHONSUS CARDINAL STRITCH, ARCHBISHOP OF CHICAGO #1350 Created a Cardinal by Pope Pius XII on December 23, 1945, Archbishop Samuel A. Stritch of Chicago is chairman of the Administrative Board of the National Catholic Welfare Conference and also heads the American Bishops’ Committee on the Pope’s Peace Pointes set up in 1941. A native of Nashville, Tennessee, where he was born August 17, 1887, Cardinal Stritch completed his theological studies at the North American College in Rome and was ordained by the late Cardinal Respighi at the age of 23 years. At the age of 34, when he was named Bishop of Toledo, Cardinal Stritch became the youngest member of the American hierarchy. Nine years later, in 1930, he was named Archbishop of Milwaukee, and in 1940 succeeded the late George Cardinal Mundelein as Archbishop of Chicago. - Text transcribed from caption: JOHN JOSEPH CARDINAL GLENNON, ARCHBISHOP OF ST. LOUIS 1352 Born in Ireland on June 14, 1862, John Joseph Cardinal Glennon has been priest and bishop under five different Popes, and is regarded as one of the greatest orators the Catholic Church in the United States has ever known. Ordained in Kansas City, Mo., December 20, 1884, he was consecrated Titular Bishop of Pinars and Coadjutor Archbishop of St. Louis on April 27, 1903, and Archbishop of St. Louis on the following October 13. On December 23, 1945, he was created Cardinal by Pope Pius XII. Honored by half a dozen Presidents of the United States, Cardinal Glennon has been distinguished as a builder and administrator, and has been an active leader in the cause of Catholic education and temperance as well as an outspoken opponent of divorce, indecent literature, and other factors harmful to family life. - Text transcribed from caption: PROMINENT IN GERMAN CHRISTIAN POLITICAL MOVEMENT #1266 BERLIN -- Mrs. Hildegard Staehle, of Berlin, is an important figure in the Christian Democratic Union of Germany, which is built around remnants of the old Roman Catholic Center party, but is open to members of all faiths. Mrs. Staehle is also a councellor in the Social Service Office of the Berlin City Government. Her husband, Col. Wilhelm Staehle, was murdered by the Gestapo April 29, 1945, for anti-Nazi activity and she was thrown into a concentration camp. - Text transcribed from captions on reverse: The heavily damaged Dom, Berlin’s Protestant Cathedral, where the Kaisers attended divine worship before World War I. This church was vandalized for 8 days following the occupation of Berlin. Most of the tombs of former German emperors and princes desecrated. At the right can be seen the towering St. Mary’s Church, one of the oldest sanctuaries in Brandenburg Provinces, and one of the mostly lightly [sic] damaged of the Berlin churches. Provost Heinrich Grueber, who is Protestant Counsellor in the Berlin City Government, is pastor of St. Mary’s. Domprediger Dr. ____Doehring standing amid the ruins of the Dom, Berlin’s Protestant Cathedral. Dr. Doehring, who is still active in German church affairs, was the Kaisers’ pastor before World War I. During the Nazi regime he resisted efforts of the Hitlerites to “Nazify” the Christian Church. Services of the Dom parish are now held in a hall, as are most of church services in Berlin.

- Text transcribed from caption: BERLIN CHURCH LEADER 1292 BERLIN -- Dr. Hans Boehm, a member of the High Council of the Evangelical Church, was one of the leading anti-Nazi figures among the German clergy during the war. A Berlin Provost of the Evangelical Church, he was imprisoned five times by the Gestapo, the last time in connection with the plot against Hitler’s life in July, 1944. One of two persons to escape alive from Gestapo headquarters when the city fell, Dr. Boehm is 46 years old. His right leg was amputated in World War 1.
