- Text transcribed from caption: P-30524 FEDERATION ELECTS NEGRO, NAMES "MAN OF THE YEAR" ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- The Rev. Amos Ryce II (left), pastor of Lane Tabernacle Christian Methodist Episcopal church, was elected president of the Metropolitan Church Federation of Greater St. Louis. He is the first Negro to head the 55-year-old organization. The federation also named Dr. Ned Cole (right), dean of Christ Church Cathedral (Episcopal), as "Ecumenical Man of the Year for 1963" for his ministry in his congregation, the federation and the community. Dr. Cole has been elected Bishop Coadjutor of the Protestant Episcopal Diocese of Central New York and plans to move to Syracuse, N.Y., in the spring. - Text transcribed from caption: P-31706 HEADS UNITED CHURCH WOMEN KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Mrs. Stuart E. Sinclair of Greenfield, Mass., a director of the United Church of Christ’s Office of Communication, was elected president of the United Church Women at its 10th national assembly at Kansas City, Mo. She succeeds Mrs. Theodore F. Wallace of Shawnee Mission, Kan., as the head of the UCW, a general department of the National Council of Churches which represents some 12 million Protestant and Orthodox members. Mrs. Sinclair is a member of the General Board of the NCC, has served the UCW as vice-president and in various other positions and is a former director of the United Church Board for World Ministries. - Text transcribed from caption: JOHN JOSEPH CARDINAL GLENNON, ARCHBISHOP OF ST. LOUIS 1352 Born in Ireland on June 14, 1862, John Joseph Cardinal Glennon has been priest and bishop under five different Popes, and is regarded as one of the greatest orators the Catholic Church in the United States has ever known. Ordained in Kansas City, Mo., December 20, 1884, he was consecrated Titular Bishop of Pinars and Coadjutor Archbishop of St. Louis on April 27, 1903, and Archbishop of St. Louis on the following October 13. On December 23, 1945, he was created Cardinal by Pope Pius XII. Honored by half a dozen Presidents of the United States, Cardinal Glennon has been distinguished as a builder and administrator, and has been an active leader in the cause of Catholic education and temperance as well as an outspoken opponent of divorce, indecent literature, and other factors harmful to family life. - Text transcribed from caption: C-29744 ‘HOODLUM PRIEST’ DIES ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Father Charles Dismas Clark, S.J., known as the “Hoodlum priest” for his work in rehabilitating former prison inmates, died in St. Louis after a long illness. He was 62. In 1959 he founded Dismas House here as a haven for ex-convicts. He is shown here before the institution named for the “good thief” crucified beside Christ. Father Clark also was responsible for setting up several other such centers in U.S. cities.
