- President Johnson.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30254 PRESIDENT JOHNSON Lyndon Baines Johnson of Texas, the 36th President of the United States. Succeeding to the office of the Chief Executive upon the assassination of President Kennedy, Mr. Johnson is shown in a recent photograph taken at his office in the Capitol Building. A member of the International Convention of Christian Churches (Disciples of Christ), he has said that while the nation believes in separation of Church and State, there “is no separation between the men of the state and faith in God. The private unity of public men with their God in prayer is the enduring source of our unity…Godless nations may become powerful in the world…(but)…people do not prosper when their leaders are godless.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-NY-11E-63-W)

- Priest war hero dies at 58.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30748 PRIEST WAR HERO DIES AT 58 WORCESTER, Mass. -- Father Joseph T. O'Callahan of Worcester, the only American military chaplain to get the Congressional Medal of Honor--the nation's highest and rarest decoration for courage--died at the age of 58. Left photo shows the priest receiving the Medal of Honor in 1946 from President Truman at the White House. Father O'Callahan, a faculty member of Holy Cross College in Worcester for nearly 20 years, died on the eve of the 19th anniversary of the Japanese suicide attack on the aircraft carrier, Franklin, off the coast of Kobe on March 19, 1945. He received the medal for his heroism during that attack--beyond the call of duty--in helping to save the ship and the lives of men. The priest's exploits on that day were later subjects of a book, several magazine articles, a movie and a Navy training film. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (OJM-WOR-3D-64-NAB)

- Priest backs Cuba visitors.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-29886 PRIEST BACKS CUBA VISITORS WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Father Felix McGowan, M.M., a priest suspended by his superiors in the Maryknoll order, has thrown his support behind some 50 students who went on an unauthorized trip to Cuba. He is shown here as he addressed the students at a Washington rally. Father McGowan, a former missionary in Bolivia, was suspended from his priestly duties after he himself went to Cuba as a reporter for The Catholic Worker, a periodical published in New York. The suspended Maryknoller commented that there is religious freedom in Cuba. “All the churches are open. Priests can preach. Anybody can go to church,” he said. - Resigns under pressure.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-29743 RESIGNS UNDER PRESSURE BRAZZAVILLE -- President Fulbert Youlou, head of the Congo Republic, resigned his office as tension mounted in his capital at Brazzaville. A suspended priest, he is shown in clerical robes in 1959 as he left a conference in Elysee Palace in Paris. Before his election, Youlou was a parish priest who was forbidden to say Mass because of his political activity. After riots in Brazzaville subsided, Sime Matsika, a labor leader, began to emerge as a strong man -- some sources said he was a dedicated leftist trained in Peking. A provisional government was being maintained by the Congolese Army, a native force commanded by Lt. Col. Rene Jean of the French Army. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-BR-8C-63-RB)
