A Negro child wishes them bon voyage. Two of them were arrested in Jacksonville. At far right is Mrs. Malcolm Peabody, wife of the retired Episcopal Bishop of Central New York and mother of Massachusetts’ governor; she was arrested on March 31. At center is Mrs. John M. - Evangelist carries crusade to barroom.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-31605 EVANGELIST CARRIES CRUSADE TO BARROOM BOSTON -- Evangelist Billy Graham preached to 14,000 in Boston Garden at the opening of his crusade there, then spoke to a smaller, enthusiastic but noisier audience, at Izzy Ort's Golden Nugget Bar in the city's nightlife district. Here the evangelist chats with a patron in the bar. The "twist" band stopped playing as he told the crowd their bodies "need spiritual food." Several shouts of "We will, we will" answered his suggestion that they attend church. Mr. Graham visited the bar while on a police-escorted tour of the nightclub area. - Growing TV role in Catholic education.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31126 GROWING TV ROLE IN CATHOLIC EDUCATION BOSTON-A sign of the growing role of television in Catholic education is the Boston archdiocese’s new UHF Station WIHS-TV (Channel 38), which has a commercial license and features educational and religious programs. Its telecasts reach about 168,000 pupils in 340 elementary and high schools, as well as churches, convents and homes having UHF receivers. In this typical scene, a nun joins her pupils in viewing an educational program. The Boston station is the first in the country operated by a Catholic diocese. It will not telecast Catholic programs exclusively and plans religious presentations with the Massachusetts Council of Churches to serve the entire community. Three other dioceses have announced that they plan closed-circuit educational TV broadcasts to reach thousands of elementary and high school students in their schools. Construction permits are being sought from the Federal Communications Commission by the New York archdiocese and the Brooklyn and Rockville Center, L. I., dioceses.
