- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30358 DOCKSIDE MASS CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Father John F. Wilson, port chaplain of the Cleveland Catholic diocese, offers a memorial Mass for two stevedores killed in accidents here during the past year. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30303 SISTER’S A GOOD SPORT CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Sister Mary Stephanie, first grade teacher at St. Mel parochial school in Cleveland, sports a broken arm and a school football letter. She accidentally stepped into the middle of a touch football game in the schoolyard; two would-be pass receivers ran her down and she suffered a broken arm. Eighth graders Tom Gorman and Bob McGrail decided Sister Stephanie deserved a letter because she was such a good sport about it. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (RF-CLE-11E-63-RB)

- Somebody call a cab?
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-29850 SOMEBODY CALL A CAB? CLEVELAND, Ohio -- St. Joseph’s Academy, Catholic high school for girls in Cleveland, called a cab here for their students -- some 600 of them. The girls wanted to attend a special performance of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” at the nearby Lakewood Civic Auditorium. School officials found that chartered buses were too expensive for a relatively short haul, so they made a deal with a local cab company -- 25 cents a head. Nearly 40 cabs were put into a shuttle operation between the school and auditorium. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (RF-CLE-9B-63-RB)

- Medieval treasure at Cleveland museum.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-29718 MEDIEVAL TREASURE AT CLEVELAND MUSEUM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Scenes from the life of Christ are depicted in these miniature paintings taken from pages of the Gotha Missal -- a medieval Mass book recently acquired by the Cleveland Museum of Art. Containing the main body of the missal and the Church calendar, the 164-page work is French and dates from 1375. Thought to be made for Charles V of France, it is known as the Gotha Missal because it was once owned by the Duke of Gotha in Germany. The manuscript has been attributed to Jean Bondol, French court painter and valet de chambre of Charles V at that time. At tope is the book opened up to illustrations entitled “The Crucifixion,” at left, and “Christ in Majesty.” Miniature scenes at the bottom are (from left): “The Annunciation,” in which Mary learns from the Angel Gabriel that she is to be the mother of Christ; “The Resurrection;” and “The Trinity,” a representation of God the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost.
