- Medieval treasure at Cleveland museum.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-29718 MEDIEVAL TREASURE AT CLEVELAND MUSEUM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Scenes from the life of Christ are depicted in these miniature paintings taken from pages of the Gotha Missal -- a medieval Mass book recently acquired by the Cleveland Museum of Art. Containing the main body of the missal and the Church calendar, the 164-page work is French and dates from 1375. Thought to be made for Charles V of France, it is known as the Gotha Missal because it was once owned by the Duke of Gotha in Germany. The manuscript has been attributed to Jean Bondol, French court painter and valet de chambre of Charles V at that time. At tope is the book opened up to illustrations entitled “The Crucifixion,” at left, and “Christ in Majesty.” Miniature scenes at the bottom are (from left): “The Annunciation,” in which Mary learns from the Angel Gabriel that she is to be the mother of Christ; “The Resurrection;” and “The Trinity,” a representation of God the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost. - Honorably retired.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: HONORABLY RETIRED #1787 NEW YORK -- Almost a tradition in itself is this old bell standing outside the rectory of St. George’s Protestant Episcopal church here. Made in England, it cost 250 pounds sterling and was presented to the church by Thomas H. Smith in 1818. For many years it hung in the old church in Beekman Street and afterward in the chapel at 14th Street. In 1905 it was removed to its present site after it was reported that it had been cracked by improper ringing. Once asked by the city Fire Department if the bell could be rung in case of fire, the vestry called attention to a by-law of the church directing the sexton “to have the bell rung at all alarms of fire.” Shown inspecting the bell is the rector of St. George’s, the Rev. Elmore M. McKee. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BH-NY-MES-3C-6-O-A-E)

- Episcopal Bishop of Liberia.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: EPISCOPAL BISHOP OF LIBERIA #1797 NEW YORK -- The Rt. Rev. Bravid W. Harris, bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Church’s Missionary District of Liberia, West Africa, (shown above) conferred here with Presiding Bishop Henry St. George Tucker at Church headquarters. The Episcopal Church has 3,052 communicants and about 2,500 church school pupils and numerically it is the largest church in Liberia. Bishop Harris, whose control extends over 57 churches and mission stations, said he was fortunate to visit the establishments even twice a year, owing to transportation difficulties in the 45,000 sq. mile country. “Along the coast I travel by surf-boat, a kind of sailing vessel which, of course, depends on the winds. It takes three days at best to travel 60 miles,” he said. “Travel to the interior, by river, is accomplished by dug-out canoe.” The Bishop went to West Africa last October. A native of Warrenton, N.C., he was rector of the Grace Episcopal Church, Norfolk, Va., for 19 years when he joined the Church’s National Council here as educational secretary for its Negro work. He plans to return to Liberia in two months. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BH-NY-JOG-2C-6-A-E)
