- Text transcribed from caption: RECTOR OF TOKYO UNIVERSITY CHAPEL 1424 TOKYO -- Chaplain Takaharu Takamatsu, rector of All Saints Chapel of St. Paul’s University here, was removed from his post during the war, but he conducted Bible classes in his own home. The chapel was desecrated and used as a storehouse for the Japanese Army. He is surrounded by students who now attend his daily chapel services. - Text transcribed from caption: NEW CATHOLIC CHURCH TO RISE ON HIROSHIMA’S RUINS #1727 HIROSHIMA, Japan -- Devastation such as this at the Roman Catholic missionaries’ residence followed the dropping of the atom bomb which levelled all buildings on the grounds. A new church will be built here, however, in commemoration of the 200,000 natives of the city who died in the disaster. Father Hugo Lassalle, S.J., was in the building which stood here when the bomb dropped, but escaped with serious cuts and bruises. He has erected a hut (right) where he lives and holds services. - Text transcribed from caption: #44 CHRISTIAN TEACHERS ON OKINAWA A group of high school teachers, all Christians who teach in the schools established at Shimmabuke, Okinawa [sic. Shimabuku, Okinawa], where Shosei Kina acts as the superintendent. He is one of the original converts to Christianity as a result of a brief visit to the island by a visiting Methodist missionary enroute to Japan. Before his departure, the missionary presented to Shosei a Bible in the Japanese language. This Bible is still being used by him in spreading the Gospel to his followers. - Text transcribed from caption: #43 CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY OF OKINAWA Chaplain Roy N. Hillyer, senior chaplain of the Tenth Army on Okinawa (seated at center of table) with leaders of the Christian community at Shimmabuke, Okinawa [sic. Shimabuku, Okinawa]. The two men at the right of the table were originally converted by a Methodist missionary who spent a short time on the island, thirty years ago, while enroute to Japan. They are Mojon and Shosei Kina, brothers. Seated at the left is Corporal Tom Higa, a native of Shimmabuke [sic. Shimabuku], who had gone to school in Honolulu, and there enlisted in the U.S. Army. Shosei is superintendent of the school system. Both he and his brother have been preaching the Gospel from the Bible in the Japanese language left with them by the missionary, thirty years ago.
