- Philadelphia church a national shrine.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PHILADELPHIA CHURCH A NATIONAL SHRINE #2060 PHILADELPHIA -- Gloria Dei (Old Swedes) church, the oldest church in Philadelphia, is one of the religious edifices in the Atlantic states chosen as national shrines. This original brick building was dedicated on July 2, 1700, two years after start of construction. It stands on the site of the old Wicaco blockhouse in which services were held by Swedish settlers who had moved up from further down along the Delaware River. One of its early pastors, Andrew Rudman, held a citizenship certificate signed by William Penn, and the document still hangs on one of the church walls. Betsy Ross, traditionally-known designer of the five-pointed start in the U.S. flag, is supposed to have been married in Gloria Dei. - Seeks to cut accident toll.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: SEEKS TO CUT ACCIDENT TOLL #3118 CHICAGO -- Sister Mary Carmelyn of Mundelein College here spends most of her time teaching safety. An expert in what causes accidents of all kinds, Sister Carmelyn is on President Truman’s highway safety committee and a staunch advocate of systemic safety education from kindergarten through college. A member of the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, her interest stems from teaching the Red Cross accident prevention course at the school in 1941. In this photo she is using five wooden blocks to demonstrate to Mary Agnes O’Grady, a student, the history of every accident. The blocks represent, from left to right, hereditary factors, personal factors, hazard, accident and injury. In the second step of the demonstration, she removes the middle block -- “hazard” -- and only the first two blocks fall. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (AN-CHI-MES-4A-6-C-D)
