An excerpt from his prayer: “Hold us, we pray, and the people of America, calm and steady and full of faith for the Republic in this tragic hour of our history. Succeeding to the office of the Chief Executive upon the assassination of President Kennedy, Mr. Johnson is shown in a recent photograph taken at his office in the Capitol Building. A member of the International Convention of Christian Churches (Disciples of Christ), he has said that while the nation believes in separation of Church and State, there “is no separation between the men of the state and faith in God. The private unity of public men with their God in prayer is the enduring source of our unity…Godless nations may become powerful in the world…(but)…people do not prosper when their leaders are godless.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-NY-11E-63-W)

John Tracy Ellis, noted Catholic scholar, resigned as church history professor at the Catholic University of America after 30 years as student and faculty member. He will assume the same teaching post at the University of San Francisco. A teacher at Catholic University, only Pontifical university in this country, for 28 years, Msgr. Ellis had been church history professor there since 1947. He has been on leave from Catholic University for some months and has been residing there. The priest holds worldwide recognition as a church historian and for encouraging Catholics to deepen and broaden their intellectual life. Last year, Msgr. Ellis charged that Catholic University had been undergoing a “type of suppression” for nearly a decade. He made the comment at a time when the names of four noted theologians were withdrawn by university officials from a list of proposed speakers suggested by a student group. - Priest given title of Protopresbyter.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30710 PRIEST GIVEN TITLE OF PROTOPRESBYTER NEW YORK -- Pope Paul VI has conferred a rare title -- that of Protopresbyter -- upon Father Andrew Rogosh, assistant secretary of the Catholic Near East Welfare Association. He is the only Protopresbyter in the United States and one of the few in the Catholic world. Title is a distinction in the Byzantine-Russian Rite which resembles to some extent the rank of Protonotary Apostolic in the Roman Rite. It carries with it certain privileges of dress and precedence, including the right to wear the mitre [sic. miter]. The papal honor was in recognition of Father Rogosh's 20 years of service with the welfare agency. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (R-NY-3B-64-W)

- Burma surgeon's hospital threatened.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30519 BURMA SURGEON'S HOSPITAL THREATENED NAMKHAN, Burma -- The famous "Burma Surgeon," Dr. Gordon S. Seagrave, 66, has pledged to "fight on to the very end" in a struggle to keep his Baptist Hospital at Namkhan, Burma, operating. New government restrictions, spurred by a drive toward greater nationalization, have seriously affected his medical activity in the country's northern hills. Two of Dr. Seagrave's assistants were finding it difficult to remain in Burma because of an edict revoking permits for foreign doctors and the government's withdrawal of a $10,000 annual grant to the hospital. In Rangoon, two other mission hospitals were closed by the government. Friends have reported that the famed Burma Surgeon, though showing signs of strain from his many years of service, has vowed to keep his institution in operation. Though an American citizen, Dr. Seagraves is not affected by the drive against foreign doctors because he was born in Burma. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-NY-1D-64-NBM)

- New Anglican Archbishop of Capetown.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30580 NEW ANGLICAN ARCHBISHOP OF CAPETOWN CAPETOWN -- Bishop Robert Selby Taylor of Grahamstown, a 53-year-old, six-foot athletic clergyman, was elected Archbishop of Capetown, automatically becoming Metropolitan of the Anglican Church of the Province of South Africa. He succeeds Archbishop Joost de Blank, who retired because of ill health and has been named a canon of Westminster Abbey. Like Dr. de Blank, who gained worldwide attention for his out-spoken attacks on South Africa's apartheid policy, Archbishop Taylor is a staunch foe of racial segregation. A native of Yorkshire, Archbishop Taylor has headed the Grahamstown diocese since 1959. He is a former bishop of Northern Rhodesia and of Pretoria. He was elected archbishop by an assembly of clergy, laity and bishops which deliberated three days before agreeing on a successor to Dr. de Blank. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30534 BAPTIST MISSIONARIES VICTIMS OF TERRORISTS KWILU PROVINCE, Congo -- The first American known to be a victim of anti-government guerillas in a wave of Congo terrorism was Miss Irene Ferrel, 42, of Jermone, Idaho (left), who was killed with a poisoned arrow. A co-worker at the Baptist Aid Station in Kwilu Province, Miss Ruth B. Hege, 57, of Wellington, Ohio (right) was reported hospitalized after rebels hacked her hands off. Both women were associated with Baptist Mid-Missions of Cleveland, Ohio, an agency of the General Association of Regular Baptist Churches. At least three other missionaries, all Roman Catholic priests, died in the widespread attack which was believed to have destroyed nearly all mission stations in the region.
