- Description
- With complete services conducted in "sign language," the Baptist Church for the Deaf was dedicated yesterday before an audience of nearly all deaf mutes. The services were marked by hymns played on the piano from which the members of the congregation "receive esthetic pleasure through vibrations," according to the Rev. Leon E. Hilton, pastor of the new church, who delivered the sermon in the finger language of the deaf.

Three generations of the Vass family served the Presbyterian Church in the United States and the Congo during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Vass III's wife (and daughter of medical missionary Eugene R. Kellersberger), Winifred Kellersberger (1917-2010), also served with her husband. This collection includes photographic prints, glass and film negatives, and lantern slides primarily documenting Vass II in the Congo, the American Presbyterian Congo Mission (APCM), the S.S. - Little displaced person Lydia Fedial, six, one of the 813 DP's to arrive here today on the U.S. Transport General Black finds herself among friends she likes as she accepts some candy from the Rev. Joseph P. Koncous, president of the United Lithuanian Relief, one of the many organizations whose representatives met the ship when it docked late this afternoon. Lydia, with a foresight that does credit to her years, is clutching a book on basic English in her other hand.

- Description
- The first displaced persons to be allowed to enter the United States under the new congressional act, begin to file aboard the U.S. Army transport General Black at Bremerhaven, Germany, Oct. 21. The DPs coming to America on the ship represent 11 nations and number 813 persons. Speeches by military and civic personages and a concert by an army band marked the sailing of the "Ship of Freedom." Photo radioed from London, received in New York Oct. 22.
