- Punjab Sikhs form colorful colony.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PUNJAB SIKHS FORM COLORFUL COLONY #1545 VANCOUVER, B.C. -- Some 40 years ago pioneering Sikhs from Punjab came here and settled around Vancouver, New Westminster and Victoria. Although they have become successful businessmen and farmers, they have kept many of their Punjab ways, most evident of which is their religion. Here a venerable priest, barefooted and cross-legged, reads the Granth, the sacred book of the Sikhs. It is a compilation of the songs of Nanak, who founded the religion 450 years ago, and those of other poets. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PUNJAB SIKHS FORM COLORFUL COLONY #1544 VANCOUVER, B.C. -- Some 40 years ago pioneering Sikhs from Punjab came here and settled around Vancouver, New Westminster and Victoria. Although they have become successful businessmen and farmers, they have kept many of their Punjab ways, most evident of which is their religion. Founded 450 years ago by Nanak, a native of Lahore, the Sikhs have their own temple here, altar of which is shown above. Richly embroidered silk and satin with which it is covered is of great value and antiquity. Guards stand with drawn swords all during service. There are no seats in temple and participants sit on the floor. Like guards, they remove their shoes before entering place of worship.
