- Pope in helicopter waits for take-off.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31402 POPE IN HELICOPTER WAITS FOR TAKE-OFF CASTEL GANDOLFO, Italy -- Pope Paul VI sits in a helicopter at Castel Gandolfo awaiting take-off of a 75-mile flight to Orvieto where he participated in ceremonies marking the 700th anniversary of the world-wide Feastday of Corpus Christi. In making the flight, Paul VI became the first Pope to use a helicopter. He also is the first pontiff to travel by airplane -- a precedent he established in January when he visited the Holy Land. - Pope outlines first encyclical.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-31380 POPE OUTLINES FIRST ENCYCLICAL CASTEL GANDOLFO, Italy -- Pope Paul VI is shown as he outlines the scope of his first encyclical in speaking to thousands of pilgrims from various parts of the world at a general audience. The pontiff disclosed that among questions discussed in his encyclical will be peace and the relationship between Christian and economic life. He said it also will deal with the "dialogue of the Church with the world of the non-Christian religions and with the choir of the Christian Churches still separated from the Catholic Church." The encyclical would not contain specific theological or doctrinal points, he said, and will be of an "exhortative" nature. It will be called Ecclesiam Suam (His Church) and be dated Aug. 6, the Feast of the Transfiguration of Christ. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (U-8A-64-NAB)

Landing on a site about two miles from the town, the Pope motored to the ancient Orvieto Cathedral as crowds lining the streets shouted greetings. At the cathedral the Pope celebrated a Mass and delivered a brief homily on man's need for spiritual and material welfare. The service marked the 700th anniversary of the Feastday of Corpus Christi, established throughout the worldwide Church by the Pope Urban IV in a bull dated Sept. 8, 1264. The Pope's helicopter flight was the first ever taken by a pontiff. Last January Paul VI became the first Pope to use an airplane when he visited the Holy Land. - Pope returns home from India.
- Description
- C-31896 POPE RETURNS HOME FROM INDIA ROME -- A smiling but tired Pope Paul VI acknowledges the warm welcome given to him by a cheering crowd on his arrival at Rome’s Fiumicino Airport from his momentous visit to Bombay, India. Thousands of people holding lighted torches and the ringing of church bells accompanied the Pope during his evening ride to Vatican City. Behind him were a four-day visit to Bombay and an 8,000-mile flight. While in the Indian city -- for the 38th International Eucharist Congress -- the Pope met with many government officials and leaders of non-Catholic religions. At these meetings and in his talks, the Pope’s themes were religious unity, peace and aid to the world’s poor. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (K-12B-64-NAB)
