Lawton of Sokoto, Nigeria, right, is shown at Charlestown, Mass., as he pointed out a model of a thatched tree house used by native Catholics in the 50,000 square miles he supervises. With him is Father John R. Grace of Providence, R.I., a fellow Dominican who induced the prelate to enter the order. Bishop Lawton, who returned briefly to his native U.S. following Vatican II, told some 1,500 persons at a reception that “Africans don’t want to be Americanized any more than Americans want to be Africanized.” Although remote areas of his diocese includes Africans slow to accept missionaries, Bishop Lawton said that “one is safer in the Nigerian bush than on the streets of Boston.” He added that “while we were apprehensive at first,” the American Peace Corps had done “tremendous things and made a great impression on the Africans.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (EM-BO-12B-64-W)

- Cardinal visits Swahili school.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-29788 CARDINAL VISITS SWAHILI SCHOOL MARYKNOLL, N.Y. -- Laurian Cardinal Rugambwa, Bishop of Bukoba, Tanganyika, talks with Swahili instructors at the Maryknoll Motherhouse during his recent visit to the U.S. More emphasis is being placed by the missionary order on Swahili because of the Tanganyikan government’s decision to unify that East African country through a common language. This summer Maryknoll priests and nuns are being taught the language under the direction of Father George F. Pfister, M.M. (right), director of the order’s Swahili School. Also shown chatting with Cardinal Rugambwa, the first Negro Prince of the Church, are two African teachers on Father Pfister’s staff. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (M-NY-8E-63-RB)
