- Text transcribed from caption: C-31367 PRIEST ADDRESSES WORKERS FOR THE BLIND NEW YORK -- Father Thomas J. Carroll, director of the Catholic Guild for the Blind, Newton, Mass. (center), was a featured speaker at the 38th convention of the American Association of Workers for the Blind (AAWB) in New York. The priest, who publishes Listen, a bi-monthly newspaper on blindness, is shown assisting in the presentation of the association’s 1964 Ambrose M. Shotwell Memorial Award for distinguished service in the field of work for the blind. Receiving the award is George E. Keane, assistant executive director of the Industrial Home for the Blind, Brooklyn, N. Y. (left). It was presented by John E. McKeen, vice-president of the home’s Board of Trustees. Father Carroll has been associated with the Catholic Guild for the Blind since 1938. Last year he was honored for his work on the President’s Committee on Employment of the Handicapped and for his services as a member of the National Advisory Council on Vocational Rehabilitation. The conference was sponsored by Fordham University. During the Mass, Father Rogosh was blessed as the only priest in this country to be made a Protopresbyter, a distinction in the Byzantine Rite resembling the rank of Protonotary Apostolic in the Roman Rite. The meeting’s basic document was Pacem in Terris (Peace on Earth), the last encyclical of the late Pope John XXIII. It was chosen for its importance not only to Catholics but to all men.
