- General MacArthur.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30828 GENERAL MACARTHUR One of America’s greatest soldiers in religious setting. At top left, General of the Army Douglas MacArthur, who died in Washington, D.C., at 84, is shown in 1951 as he reviewed the annual parade of the Brooklyn Sunday School Union. On that day he greeted some 100,00 children of more than 300 Protestant churches. At top right, the strength of the man is displayed in a portrait taken during his years in Pacific areas. Below, General MacArthur is shown in 1955 when he received an “Award of Merit Extraordinary” from the then Protestant Episcopal Bishop Francis Eric Bloy of Los Angeles. - Methodist bishops barred at Jackson church.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30818 METHODIST BISHOPS BARRED AT JACKSON CHURCH JACKSON, Miss. -- Two Methodist bishops who were refused admit-tance to Galloway Methodist church in Jackson, Miss., on Easter Sunday, visit after the incident with the Rev. Wendell Taylor (right), pastor of the Central Methodist church (Negro), in the city. Bishop James K. Mathews of Boston (left) and Bishop Charles Golden of Nashville, Tenn., were blocked by ushers at both front and side doors of the Galloway church. On the same day, seven ministers were arrested as they and two Negro youths tried to enter Capitol Street Methodist church, where several integrated groups previously have been turned away. Bishop Mathews, commenting on the incident at Galloway church, said some onlookers made remarks relating to “our probable ancestry and our likely ultimate destination.” At the same time, he said, many white members “were bold enough” to greet them. “This took real courage on their part.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (DL-J-4A-64-NBM)

- Dr. Carlton Hayes dies at 82.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31547 DR. CARLTON HAYES DIES AT 82 AFTON, N.Y. -- Dr. Carlton J.H. Hayes, internationally known historian and diplomat who was a co-founder and first Catholic co-chairman of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, died at his hometown of Afton, N.Y., at the age of 82. He served as American Ambassador to Spain during World War II and wrote of his assignment in "Wartime Mission to Spain." The noted layman, a leader in the movement to improve interreligious and integroup [intergroup] relations, played an active role in the NCCJ as co-chairman from 1928 until 1946. In a statement lauding his work, Dr. Lewis Webster Jones, president of the NCCJ, cited Dr. Hayes as one of the early "giants" in the interreligious movement. For about 50 years after the turn of the century, Dr. Hayes was a well-knwon [well-known] figure on the Columbia University campus, where he was first a student -- receiving a Ph.D. in 1909 -- and later an instructor and Seth Low Professor of History, retiring from this post in 1950. - Former chaplain in Moscow dead at 62.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31308 FORMER CHAPLAIN IN MOSCOW DEAD AT 62 WORCESTER, Mass. -- Father Leopold Braun, A.A., who spent 12 years as chaplain to American Roman Catholics in Moscow, died in St. Vincent’s Hospital, Worcester, Mass., at the age of 62. The Assumptionist was the first American priest to go to Moscow under the 1933 Roosevelt-Litvincoff Agreement, providing for U.S. recognition of Soviet Russia. Under the agreement’s religious protocol, Russia consented to let a clergyman go to Moscow to administer to the spiritual needs of employees in the American embassy. Father Braun served in Moscow from early 1934 until late 1945. After he returned to this country he lectured and wrote as an outspoken critic of the Soviet regime. He helped found the Assumptionist Research and Missionary Institute in New York and was its director until last year. Photo shows Father Braun as he testified in 1952 before a special House of Representatives subcommittee in Washington, D.C., which was investigating the massacre of some 10,000 Polish officers in the Katyn Forest in Russia. - The Cushing story
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31209 THE CUSHING STORY: MISSIONS, ECUMENISM (Second of a Series of 2 Photo Layouts) BOSTON -- Foreign missions and ecumenism distinguish the 25-year episcopate of Richard Cardinal Cushing, Archbishop of Boston. The “man of many hats” marked the 25th anniversary of his consecration on June 29. At top left, his mission zeal is epitomized by yet another hat, a “lluchu” given to him by Indians in Bolivia. Cardinal Cushing has been honored by two Popes for his foundation and maintenance of the Missionary Society of St. James the Apostle for Latin America. One hundred U.S. priests now serve areas long hit by a shortage of clergy, and the prelate, famed as a fund-raiser, supports their work at a cost of $1 million annually. At upper right, he is shown as he was embraced in 1947 by Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras, supreme leader of Eastern Orthodoxy -- the patriarch was then Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church in North and South America. Cardinal Cushing’s relations with the Orthodox and Protestants have spurred the ecumenical movement in the U.S.; in recent years he has preached or lectured before many non-Catholic groups. Below, left, he is shown with his old friend, Augustin Cardinal Bea, president of the Vatican Secretariat for Promoting Christian Unity, as they participated in an unprecedented Catholic-Protestant Colloquium at Harvard. With them are Dr. Nathan Pusey, Harvard’s president, and Dr. Samuel H. Miller, Dean of Harvard Divinity School and chairman of the Massachusetts Council of Churches’ Committee on Christian Unity.
