- Description
- New York--A peaceful pre-Independence Day demonstration for racial equality was held by some 500 clergymen and members of the United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. The placard-carrying demonstrators marched for 45 minutes in a City Hall Plaza area, then heard addresses by Mayor Robert F. Wagner, center, and Dr. W. Eugene Houston, left, a Harlem pastor who heads the presbytery's new commission on religion and race. The Mayor called for enactment of President Kennedy's civil rights proposals and pledged continuing efforts toward greater racial equality in New York City. Dr. Houston warned against the city "dragging its feet"on integration and called for acceleration of school desegregation.

- Bang Khiet Nghe, holding flowers, a 14-year-old Vietnamese refugee who had escaped to the People's Republic of China (PRC), is shown after her recent arrival in New York. Greeting Bang at John F. Kennedy International Airport are her mother, Ai Link Huynh, her three brothers, and Bruce Leimsidor, of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS). HIAS helped bring her to the U.S. -- marking the first time the Jewish migration agency has assisted and received a refugee directly from the PRC.

- Text transcribed from caption: C-31049 For Release: Wed., May 27, or later AMERICA MAGAZINE LAUNCHES ECUMENICAL INSTITUTE NEW YORK -- A sketch of the conference room of the John LaFarge Institute being launched by America, national Catholic weekly, for the “cooperation and fellowship of all men of goodwill” in helping to cope with intergroup and other community problems. At bottom is America House in New York, where the institute will be located. The nine-story building also will house the new headquarters of the weekly magazine, the monthly Catholic Mind, the Catholic Book Club and other units of America Press. The center will include a chapel, library and a number of rooms for seminars and workshops. The ecumenical institute honors the late Father John LaFarge, a Jesuit who served as an editor of America for 37 years. - Text transcribed from caption: PRESENT CITATIONS TO HEROIC CHAPLAINS NEXT OF KIN #1155 NEW YORK -- Father George B. Ford, New York, presents sitations [sic] to next of kin of four Protestant, Jewish and Catholic Navy chaplains who died together in the sinking of the transport Dorchester in 1943 after giving their lifebelts to others aboard the ship. The citations were given by the Committee of Catholics for Human Rights at a dinner in the Hotel Roosevelt, New York. The four recipients, shown left to right, were Mrs. Clarke V. Poling and Mrs. George L. Fox, wives of the Protestant chaplains; Mrs. Leonard A. Schwoebel, sister of Catholic Chaplain John P. Washington; and Mrs. Alexander D. Goode, wife of the Jewish chaplain.
