- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30964 PRELATE, GOVERNOR BACK SCHOOL PRAYER WASHINGTON, D.C. -- A Roman Catholic bishop and the controversial governor of a Southern state attacked U.S. Supreme Court decisions barring prayer and Bible-reading in public schools in testimony before the House Judiciary Committee. Auxiliary Bishop Fulton J. Sheen of New York, left, and Alabama’s Gov. George C. Wallace, right, are shown with Rep. Emanuel Celler (D.-N.Y.), committee chairman. Mr. Celler opposes devotional acts in public schools. His committee is conducting hearings on legislation which proposes a Constitutional amendment that would permit prayer and Bible-reading.
