- Title
- Hungarian bishops consecrated.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31769 HUNGARIAN BISHOPS CONSECRATED BUDAPEST -- An unprecedented ceremony in the Catholic Church of Hungary. Five bishops are consecrated at once in St. Stephen’s Basilica, Budapest, by Archbishop Endre Hamvas of Kalocsa. Appointment of the bishops and their designation as administrators of long-vacant bishoprics followed the “limited” agreement between the Vatican and Hungary’s Communist regime. The bishops can be identified here by the kerchiefs they wear. Left to right, they are Auxiliary Bishop Pal Brezanoczy of Eger, standing and partly obscured by priest; Auxiliary Bishop Jozsef Cserhati of Pecs; Bishop Jozsef Iljias of Csanad; Auxiliary Bishop Jozsef Winkler of Szombathely; and Auxiliary Bishop Jozsef Banic of Gyor. Bishop Winkler had already been raised to the episcopacy by Pope John XXIII but conditions in Hungary had prevented his consecration. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-NY-10E-64-W)

- Hungarian bishop behind bars.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: HUNGARIAN BISHOP BEHIND BARS #c-2076 BUDAPEST -- Imprisoned here as a “war criminal” Bishop Stefan Uzdoczy-Zadravetz (shown behind prison bars) has long been noted for his strong anti-Communistic attitude. He was “Army Bishop” of Admiral Nicholas Horthy’s forces after the last war. Although the bishop has been in retirement since 1928, most of the material for the accusations against him was gathered from his speeches and activities during World War I and in the “counter-revolutionary” period following it when Horthy’s regime superceded [sic] that of the Bolshevik Bela Kun. The 62-year-old prelate lives in a room with 30 other prisoners. Three times weekly he celebrates Mass in the prison chapel. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (EZ-BUDA-MES-3C-6-C)
