- Two nuns attended the section dealing with \u201ctreatment of religious viewpoints in the public school curriculum\u201d attracted three times as many delegates and observers as any other group meeting at the National Conference on Religion and Public Education held under the auspices of the National Council of Churches. The section divided into three smaller groups to discuss curriculum and one of them is shown here. At end in background are the section chairman, Dr. Harold A. Pflug of Webster Grove, Mo., and on his right, the recorder, Mrs. Gerald Walsh of Syracuse, N.Y.

A joint statement calling the convocation and stating that religious groups cannot watch the debate as “uninvolved spectators” was issued by Dr. Eugene Carson Blake (speaking), chief executive officer of the United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. and head of the National Council of Churches’ Commission on Religion and Race; Father John F. - Text transcribed from caption: P-30791 EASTER DAWN SERVICE AT RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL NEW YORK -- More than 5,500 persons were in New York’s Radio City Music Hall at 7 a.m. Easter morning to take part in the 45th annual Easter Dawn Service sponsored by the Manhattan Division of the Protestant Council of the City of New York. Musical selections were provided by the Hope College Chapel Choir of Holland, Mich., (top photo) and the “Sponono Singers” of South Africa, members of the cast of the Broadway play, “Sponono,” by Alan Paton and Krishna Shah. Among those leading the hour-long service (bottom photo) were, from left to right: Philip Huston, a Broadway actor and lay member of St. Clement’s Episcopal church in Manhattan; the Rev. L.E. Terrell, pastor of Manhattan’s Union Baptist church; Dr. Lawrence L. Durgin, president of the Protestant Council’s Manhattan Division and pastor of Broadway Congregational church; Dr. Walter E. Bock, pastor of St. Peter’s Lutheran church in New York (at podium), and Dr. Dan M. Potter, executive director of the Protestant Council (far right). - Text transcribed from caption: PC-31197 RIGHTS BILL THANKSGIVING SERVICE WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Some 200 Protestants, Roman Catholics and Jews joined in an interreligious thanksgiving service to mark the Senate passage of the civil rights bill and to pledge continued efforts on behalf of racial justice. It was held on the lawn of the Methodist Building in Washington, about a block from the Capitol. Reading the Scripture is Bishop Henry C. Bunton of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. Other leaders in the service included Father John F. Cronin, assistant director, National Catholic Welfare Conference’s Social Action Department (center of group at wall). Seated next to him (white robe) is Dean Francis B. Sayre, Jr., of Washington Cathedral (Episcopal). In front of them (bending) is Dr. Robert W. Spike, executive director, National Council of Churches’ Commission on Religion and Race. The service was sponsored by the NCC, the NCWC, the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, and the Theological Students Vigil for Civil Rights. - Text transcribed from caption: PC-30319 CATHOLIC OBSERVERS AT NATIONAL COUNCIL ASSEMBLY PHILADELPHIA -- Msgr. Joseph N. Moody of Highland Falls, N.Y., (left), and Msgr. Daniel Cantwell of Chicago (right) were two of five official Catholic observers at the triennial General Assembly of the National Council of Churches in Philadelphia. Msgr. Moody is head of Ladycliffe [sic] College’s Social Science Department, and Msgr. Cantwell is chaplain for the Catholic Council on Working Life and the Catholic Interracial Council of Chicago. They are shown with Dr. Franklin H. Littell of Chicago Theological Seminary, a major speaker at the assembly attended by representatives of 31 Protestant and Orthodox bodies. The other three Catholic observers were Father Benjamin Masse, S.J., of New York; Father Dennis J. Comey, S.J., of Philadelphia, and Msgr. John P. Connery of Overbrook, Pa. Mueller of the Evangelical United Brethren Church, right, new president of the National Council of Churches, is congratulated after receiving the presidential gavel from J. Irwin Miller of Columbus, Ind., outgoing NCC head. Bishop Mueller, who comes from Indianapolis, Ind., was elected to the National Council post at its triennial General Assembly in Philadelphia. As NCC president, he heads the largest non-Catholic church organization in this country, representing 31 Protestant and Orthodox bodies with more than 40,000,000 members. Before leaving the city, Mr. Graham suggested that Negro leaders declare a moratorium on protest demonstrations until the Senate ends debate on civil rights legislation. Her publication, which is devoted to “promoting friendship between the old and new people of God under both the Old and New Testaments,” is sponsored by Catholics but also features articles by Protestants and Jews. LeRoy Collins (center), director of the Community Relations Service established by the Civil Rights Act, presides at a session during a four-day consultation at Warrenton, Va., where some 150 Protestant, Roman Catholic and Jewish clergy and laymen discussed ways to implement the Civil Rights Act and the new anti-poverty program. Sharing the speakers’ table are Dr. Robert W. Spike (right), executive director of the National Council of Churches’ Commission on Religion and Race, and Dr. J. Oscar Lee, associate director of the NCC commission. The consultation was sponsored by the NCC, the National Catholic Welfare Conference and the Synagogue Council of America. Mueller, president of the National Council of Churches (left), and members of the NCC’s policy-making General Board gather at a railroad depot in Des Moines, Iowa. They dedicate two carloads of corn and soybeans given in the Iowa CROP campaign for overseas distribution through Church World Service, the Council’s material aid agency. The NCC president, senior bishop of the Evangelical United Brethren Church, paid tribute to Iowa churchmen and farmers for their participation in the relief program, noting that the CROP (Christian Rural Overseas Program) of Church World Service started in Iowa in 1947. The scene is from a new documentary film, “The Captive,” produced through the National Council of Churches under the sponsorship of eight member denominations. Tracing the plight of an actual man whose one skill, digging coal, is now obsolete, the documentary calls attention to pockets of poverty throughout the country and seeks to stimulate concern over ways to free the nation’s “captive poor.” The Council on International Nontheatrical Events gave “The Captive” one of its 1964 Golden Eagle Film Awards and included it among films chosen to represent the U.S. at major overseas film festivals.
