- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30748 PRIEST WAR HERO DIES AT 58 WORCESTER, Mass. -- Father Joseph T. O'Callahan of Worcester, the only American military chaplain to get the Congressional Medal of Honor--the nation's highest and rarest decoration for courage--died at the age of 58. Left photo shows the priest receiving the Medal of Honor in 1946 from President Truman at the White House. Father O'Callahan, a faculty member of Holy Cross College in Worcester for nearly 20 years, died on the eve of the 19th anniversary of the Japanese suicide attack on the aircraft carrier, Franklin, off the coast of Kobe on March 19, 1945. He received the medal for his heroism during that attack--beyond the call of duty--in helping to save the ship and the lives of men. The priest's exploits on that day were later subjects of a book, several magazine articles, a movie and a Navy training film. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (OJM-WOR-3D-64-NAB)

- Chaplain to refugees.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-29907 CHAPLAIN TO REFUGEES MACAO -- Refugees from Communist China can count on Spanish-born Father Luis Ruiz, S.J., to help them when they arrive in the Portuguese enclave of Macao. Known as “The chaplain to the refugees,” the Jesuit maintains a villa called Casa Ricci where his door is always open to those in need. He talks here with an old Chinese woman who came to him for funds to start a fruit business. Called “Lui Sam Fu” by the refugees, Father Ruiz was a missionary in China before the Reds took over. Since 1951 he has aided thousands of refugees from behind the “Bamboo Curtain.” Last year 10,801 persons registered at Casa Ricci. The exodus to Macao will continue, Father Ruiz says, “as long as people do not find more food and liberty in Red China.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (U-NY-9C-63-RB)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-4010 THEY EXPLORE THE MYSTERIES OF THE HEAVENS CASTEL GANDOLFO, Italy -- In the modern observatory at the Pope’s summer residence, Brother Matthew Timmers (right), discoverer of Timmers’ Comet, discusses with the Rev. Walter J. Miller, S.J., of New York, the method by which the track of the comet was logged. Some years ago the Papal Observatory was located in Vatican City, but electrical interference hampered the workings of the delicate instruments and it was moved here. Photography of the stars is a major activity of the observatory, and there are more than 10,000 pictures on file. The Papal Observatory was established by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582.
