- Description
- The Rev. Angel Torres, a Pentecostal faith healer from Bayamon, Puerto Rico, lays his hands on a woman during an ecumenical faith healing service at the Roman Catholic Mount Manresa Jesuit Retreat House on Staten Island. - Chaplain to the wounded.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: CHAPLAIN TO THE WOUNDED #1679 NEW YORK -- The end of the war and demobilization have altered some aspects of the Army chaplain work, but for some the job is still vital. Caring for the wounded in the hospitals is a task to which many churchmen in uniform are turning as a continuation of the work they performed so ably during the war. Patients in army hospitals include chaplains wounded in action. During the War 243 army chaplains were wounded, about five per cent of the total number of chaplains in the service. Capt. Bryan K. Johnson, Protestant chaplain from Indianapolis, Ind., gets a word of encouragement from Capt. Emanuel Carlsen, Senior Protestant chaplain at Halloran General Hospital, Staten Island, N.Y. Chaplain Johnson suffered serious injuries when he was nearly tossed overboard a transport at sea. Nurse is 1/Lt. Garnet I. Hacker, of Toledo, Ohio. Caring for the wounded in the hospitals is a task to which many churchmen in uniform are turning as a continuation of the work they performed so ably during the war. The chapel is one of the major centers at army and veterans’ hospitals. Here patients at Halloran General Hospital on Staten Island, listen to Capt. Emanuel Carlsen, Senior Protestant chaplain, conduct a service. Mural on wall behind Chaplain Carlsen depicts heroic sacrifice of four chaplains who gave up their life preservers when troopship Dorchester was torpedoed in the Atlantic Feb. 4, 1943. The four chaplains went down with the ship so that others might live. (No. 9 and last of a series) Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BH-NY-MES-2C-6-D-O-P)

Caring for the wounded in the hospitals is a task to which many churchmen in uniform are turning as a continuation of the work they performed so ably during the war. Chaplains at army and veterans’ hospitals must comfort parents of G.I.’s as well as the wounded soldiers themselves. Capt. Emanuel Carlsen, Senior Protestant chaplain at Halleran General Hospital, Staten Island, N.Y., sympathizes with Mr. and Mrs. Howard Clark, of Harrisville, N.Y., whose son M/Sgt. George H. Clark was wounded while serving as a radioman on a Flying Fortress over Berlin. An hour after this photograph was taken, Sgt. Clark died from his injuries. - Text transcribed from caption: CHAPLAIN TO THE WOUNDED #1681 NEW YORK -- The end of the war and demobilization have altered some aspects of the Army chaplain work, but for some the job is still vital. Caring for the wounded in the hospitals is a task to which many churchmen in uniform are turning as a continuation of the work they performed so ably during the war. The spiritual welfare of patients at army and veterans’ hospitals is of uppermost concern to chaplains at these institutions. Chaplains, naturally, like to see wounded G.I.’s read the Bible. Capt. Emanuel Carlsen, Senior Protestant Chaplain at Halloran General Hospital on Staten Island, presents a New Testament to Pfc. Robert W. Feostvedt, of Ridgefield Park, N.J. Chaplain Carlsen has distributed over 2,000 Testaments to patients. (No. 8 of a series) Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BH-NY-MES-2C-6-D-O-P)
