A., known as the “Junkie Priest,” is the subject of a new book which tells of his unusual ministry among thousands of women addicted to narcotics in New York City’s Greenwich Village. The priest, a member of the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement of Garrison, N. Y., is shown with an aide. Entitled “Junkie Pries,” the book was written by John D. Harris, veteran newspaperman and a non-Catholic, and published by Coward McCann of New York. The book was called to the attention of Congress by Sen. Kenneth B. Keating (R.-N. Y.), who lauded Father Egan’s ministry as planting “a seed of hope for the physical and spiritual regeneration of the unfortunate victims of narcotics addiction.” Mr. Harris has designated half of the book’s proceeds to help furnish the new Edgerly House of the Village Haven in Greenwich Village, which Father Egan has been instrumental in establishing. It is the first Halfway House in the country for female addicts leaving prison. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (SA-4C-64-NAB)

At right is Hungarian Premier Janos Kadar. The picture was taken at a time when the USSR had accelerated its atheistic indoctrination program and the Hungarian Communist regime’s relations with the Roman Catholic Church were reported somewhat improved. The Soviet Premier’s visit, marked by his most outspoken attack on Red Chinese militarism, was notable for many rumors, among them one which foresaw withdrawal of remaining Russian forces from Hungary. It also spurred renewed reports that Joszef Cardinal Mindszenty would be permitted by the regime to leave the U.S. legation at Budapest, where he has taken refuge since the abortive Freedom Fighters’ revolt of 1956. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30820 PRIEST JOINS STUDENTS IN ANTI-WALLACE PICKETING LA CROSSE, Wis. -- Msgr. Anthony P. Wagener, editor of the Times-Review, weekly of the La Crosse diocese, and Neman Club chaplain at La Crosse State College (second right), joins students picketing a hall where Gov. George Wallace of Alabama was speaking. The Southern governor, an avowed segregationist, was campaigning for the Presidential Democratic nomination in Wisconsin’s primary election. After his talk, the pickets passed out a statement which said: “Regardless of what Gov. Wallace says here tonight, the actions of persons aligning themselves with segregation are unjust, inhumane and in defiance of Christian ethics and federal law.” While in this state, Gov. Wallace also was attacked by the Catholic Herald Citizen, weekly of the Milwaukee archdiocese, which labeled him the personification of “moral evil.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (PJW-LC-4A-64-NAB)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31183 CHILDREN ‘ADOPT’ JAPANESE PRIEST CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A Japanese priest, Sacred Heart Father Augustine Hiroshi Kabayshi, offered his first Solemn Mass in Cleveland’s Our Lady of Good Counsel church because the 1,049 pupils of the parish school adopted him. The children tried to raise enough money through bake sales and raffles to bring the priest’s parents to the U.S. for his recent ordination in Fall River, Mass. Failing in that, they decided to buy the priest a chalice. Making the presentation here are David Harden and Mary Ann Benedict. The children heard of Father Augustine, a theological student in the U.S. since 1958 and the first Japanese native ordained in the Sacred Heart Fathers, through a priest of the parish who served as a missionary in Japan.
