Dr. Johannes Blauw of Hilversum, Holland, (left photo) who headed an exploratory committee for the new literature plan, addresses the group of some 200 Protes-tant and Orthodox churchmen attending the Commission sessions. The meeting also featured several workshops on various phases on missions and evangelism. Dr. Kathleen Bliss (right), head of the WCC’s Division of Ecumenical Action and the Board of Education of the Church of England, leads a group discussing the Christian approach to intellectuals. Purpose of the meeting was cited by Anglican Bishop John Sadiq of Nagpur, India, (bottom left) commission chairman, as he officiated at opening services. Two of some 200 Protestant and Orthodox leaders from 48 countries taking part (top photo) were Missionary Bishop Mar Thoma Athanasius of the Mar Thoma Syrian Church of Malabar, India, and Korula Jacob, general secretary of the National Christian Council of India. In a study section on “The Witness of Christians to Men in the Secular World,” a comment is made (bottom right) by the Rev. Robert Owen Lathan, home secretary of the London Missionary Society. - Text transcribed from caption: P-29818 WORLD COUNCIL LEADERS CONDEMNS RACISTS ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Christians who support segregation “by action or inaction” betray Jesus Christ, leaders of the World Council of Churches declared at Rochester, N.Y. The WCC’s powerful, policy-making Central Committee issued what was regarded as its strongest condemnation of discrimination. Examining the statement here are, from left to right: Dr. Eugene Carson Blake, chief executive officer of the United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A.; Sir Francis Ibiam of Nigeria, one of the six presidents of the WCC, and Methodist Bishop James K. Matthews of Boston. Dr. Blake and Bishop Matthews took part in the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, where the Presbyterian leader served as one of the 10 chairmen of the demonstration, representing the Commission on Religion and Race of the National Council of Churches.
