- Catholic 'School on Wheels.'
- Description
- Mountain View, Calif.--Public school children of St. Joseph's Parish here pose outside the 35-foot trailer-school in which they attend released-time religious instruction classes. The Rev. James B. Doyle of St. Joseph's, faced with a mushrooming congregation of San Francisco commuters, solved his scattered flock's educational problem by getting this 2 1/2 ton trailer for $2,800. The vehicle, which seats 55 pupils, pulls up to each public school before the youngsters are released. Father Doyle said that 900 public school children are under released-time instruction. St. Joseph's Parish is in the heart of a country area being rapidly developed with homes for persons working in San Francisco, 30 miles to the North.

- 'Hot Rod' racers combine religion with sports.
- Description
- Oakland, Calif.--A "Hot Rod" racing club here is believed to be the only organization of its kind in the country which combines auto racing with the practice of Christianity. Known as the Heaven Pacers of the East Bay, the club's 20 active members consider their racing fraternity as a missionary field. Members attend a brief non-denominational service before every race that is held on Sundays, in addition to praying individually during a race. Here. Don Marker, past president of the club, kneels in prayer before his "hot rod." The Heaven Pacers have as their motto this verse from I Corinthians: "Know ye not that they which run in the race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run that ye may obtain." (9:24) To join the club, applicants must "know the lord as your own personal saviour," and own or be able to build a "hot rod."

- Episcopalians get 'Dial-A-Prayer'
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PEP-18528. EPISCOPALIANS GET 'DIAL-A-PRAYER'. CORONNADO, CAL. -- The Rev. W. Don Brown, rector of Christ Episcopal Church here, has started a "Dial-A-Prayer" telephone service which has become popular in this area. The program is the first of its kind started by an Episcopal church in the country. By dialing a special number church members can hear a prayer previously recorded by Mr. Brown. The clergyman records three different prayers each day -- for the morning, afternoon, and evening hours. During the first two weeks after the phone service was started some 500 persons called daily. - Priest gets 'self-imposed' exile.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31980 PRIEST GETS 'SELF-IMPOSED' EXILE LOS ANGELES- Father John V. Coffield, pastor of Ascension church in Los Angeles, has requested--and been granted-- a "self-imposed exile" in Chicago for an indefinite period. He is shown here with Father Juan Soto (left) and a group of parishioners, most of whom are Latin Americans and Negroes. Father Coffield, in announcing the exile, claimed he had been forbidden to preach out against racial problems by James Francis Cardinal McIntyre, Archbishop of Los Anegeles. He said he preferred the exile to maintaining "silence on racism," and as a solution to "an impasse between my cardinal and myself." Father Coffield also claimed he had been given an "enforced vacation of five months" from June to November after he had spoken out against a state proposition nullifying anti-discrimination laws in housing, later approved by voters. On Sunday, Sept. 22, the nation's churchgoers joined in memorial services for four Negro girls who died when a bomb blasted a Negro Baptist church in Birmingham. here, at St. Dominic's Roman Catholic church, the more than 2,500 attending services overflowed the building. A Presbyterian patient, Mrs. Elsie Exner of Walnut Creek, Cal., started the campaign rolling when she mentioned to Dr. Hurd the need of the Korean eye clinic for old eyeglasses. He enlisted opticians and optometrists over a wide area, and in a short time 15,000 sets of usable, old glasses were contributed. Manufacturers contributed 500 new frames. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30433 LUTHERAN FLOAT WINS ROSE BOWL TROPHY PASADENA, Cal. -- The “Queens Trophy,” for the best use of flowers in the 1964 Tournament of Roses Parade at Pasadena, Cal., was awarded to the float of The Lutheran Hour, worldwide Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod radio program, sponsored by the Southern California District of the Lutheran Layman’s League. Lutheran Hour floats have won awards in the annual parade in 12 of the last 13 years but the latest trophy was the first time one of the major honors, no in the religious category, has gone to the entry. The cover on the Bible -- opened to a verse in keeping with the parade’s “Symbols of Freedom” theme -- is made of dark seeds; the pages are of carnation petals; the gold edging is yellow chrysanthemums; the grape clusters below are made of all kinds of roses, and the leaves of 6,000 orchids. More than 15,000 roses and 30,000 carnations and chrysanthemums were used. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (L-SL-1B-64-NBM)
