- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30562 POPE'S BROTHER, FRIEND AT MEMORIAL JERUSALEM -- The elder brother of Pope Paul VI lights candles in memory of 6 million Jews slain by the Nazi regime, Sen. Lodovico Montini is shown at the "Chamber of Destruction" on Mount Zion, Jerusalem, during a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Watching at right is Dr. Meir Mendes, deputy director of the Israel Department of Christian Communities in the Ministry of Religions. The Montini-Mendes families have been close since 1939 when Pope Paul (then Msgr. Giovanni Battista Montini, Pro-Secretary of State) succeeded in saving the distinguished Roman Jewish family from Fascist antisemitic persecution. Through his efforts, the family found safety in Palestine. Dr. Mendes' father, Guido, now 87, was a schoolmate of Eugenio Pacelli, who went on to become Pope Pius XII. Dr. Mendes was a member of the Israeli delegation which attended Pope Paul's coronation. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-NY-2A-64-W)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-31765 DOG OF THE BIBLE TEL AVIV, Israel -- Efforts to prevent the extinction of the “Canaanite” or “Arab” dog are underway among Israelis, who trace the lithe canine back to the days of Abraham. Until recently little attention had been paid to the Canaanite, though the breed has always been indigenous to the country. A natural watchdog, it is expected that the popularity of the “dog of the Bible” will increase among dog fanciers around the world. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (RN-TI-10E-64-NBM)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: JERUSALEM - THE HOLY CITY The Dome of the Rock #1232 The Dome of the Rock, or Kubbet es-Shakhra, is said by Arab historians to have been built in the 7th century by ‘Abd el-Melik as a Moslem shrine. A splendid example of Moslem architecture, the shrine rises above the Holy Rock, which, according to the Talmud, covers the mouth of an abyss in which the waters of the Flood are heard roaring. Abraham and Melchizedek are said to have sacrificed here. The Dome was regarded as the center of the world, and the spot upon which the Ark of the Covenant stood. Moslems maintains that beneath the Rock is the Bir el-Arwah, or well of the souls, where the souls of the dead assemble to pray twice weekly. Mohammed himself prayed at the shrine and declared that one prayer there was worth a thousand elsewhere. Legend says Mohammed was translated to heaven from this spot on the back of el-Barak, his miraculous steed. Hairs from the Prophet’s head are preserved at the shrine, and in it are also several Korans of great age. This unusual picture was made from the window of the Grand Mufti’s room in the office of the Moslem Supreme Council of Palestine. (No. 6 of a Series)
