- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31471 GOAT CLOWNS AROUND AT ANIMAL SHELTERS VICTORIA, B.C. -- Twinkle, a playful three-year-old goat at the Good Shepherd Shelter outside Victoria, British Columbia, keeps nuns on their toes and does a bit of toe-dancing herself. Sister Mary Julia (left) takes a playful bump and Mother Cecilia Mary (right) admires Twinkle's performance. "She does this just to tease me -- Twinkle is just a clown at heart," says Mother Cecilia, 75, who founded the shelter for stray and abandoned animals in 1922 as the Order of the Sisters of the Love of Jesus. She and five other nuns care for nearly 150 dogs, cats, goats and birds and currently are conducting a fund drive for $40,000 to build an animal hospital on the 23-acre site. - Victims of Haiti's anti-church regime.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30610 VICTIMS OF HAITI'S ANTI-CHURCH REGIME MONTREAL, Canada -- Tired and showing signs of strain, the first group of Jesuits expelled by Haiti's dictatorial regime returns to provincial headquarters in Montreal. Eighteen -- 13 priests and 5 Brothers -- were deported because, according to Francois Duvalier's government, they had documents "likely to imperil the security of the state." At left, Jesuits debark from plane at Montreal Airport; at right is Father Robert Jean, showing the effects of detention and abrupt deportation. Vatican Radio said that the Duvalier dictatorship had "done much to the detriment of the Church in Haiti in recent years." Since 1959 Duvalier has expelled three bishops and 17 priests on various pretexts. The Canadian Jesuits started their Haiti mission in 1953.
