- Description
- A U.S. Catholic nun helps a woman practice phonetic pronunciation in a small squatters barrio on the outskirts of San Pedro Sula, Honduras. Several illiterate women there are taking part in a program called Alfalit which teaches literacy on a phonetic basis, starting with recognition of such phonetic groups as mama, papa, zapata, and casa.

- Text transcribed from caption: 4039 FILIPINO YOUTH LEARNS THE THREE R’S MANILA -- Typical of public schools in the rural areas of the Philippines is this scene in Abuyog, Leyte Island, spearhead of the American invasion of the islands during the Pacific war. Education is free and while the official language is Tagalog, a Malayan dialect, the teaching of English is compulsory.
