VATICAN CITY -- Concelebrants of the Latin Rite Mass in St. Peter's Basilica opening the Vatican Council's third session partake of the consecrated wine with a spoon from the chalice, as Pope Paul VI stands by praying. The pontiff alone drank the wine directly from the chalice. In addition to the Pope, 24 prelates concelebrated the Mass. These included three cardinals, 15 archbishops -- two of whom were Africans; four bishops and two heads of religious orders. - Pope Paul VI's first year.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-3111 POPE PAUL VI’S FIRST YEAR (First of a Series of Two Panels) VATICAN CITY -- On June 19,1963, Giovanni Battista Cardinal Montini, Archbishop of Milan, was elected Pope and became the first pontiff in 350 years to take the name of Paul. Top row, left to right, shows the Pope’s coat of arms; the papal tiara being placed on his head by Alfred Cardinal Ottaviani during the coronation rites in St. Peter’s Basilica on June 30; his first visit outside of Vatican City -- the first of many he was to make in following the example of his predecessor, John XXIII; and Paul VI’s historic meeting with President John F. Kennedy (July 2). During that audience he praised Mr. Kennedy for his efforts for world peace and racial equality. On learning of the President’s assassination on Nov. 22, the pontiff broadcast a special message praying for the peace of his “elect soul” and lauding his devotion to “the great causes of humanity.” Bottom row, left to right; first picture shows Pope Paul at a special audience in October with Protestant, Eastern Orthodox and Anglican observers to the Second Vatican Council. Early in his reign he announced his decision to continue the Council inaugurated by John XXIII and stressed that Christian unity was one of his major concerns. Second picture was taken in November as he led some 180 members of the American hierarchy -- including Joseph Cardinal Ritte of St. Louis, Albert Cardinal Meyer of Chicago, James Francis Cardinal McIntyre of Los Angeles, and Francis Cardinal Spellman of New York -- in prayers for the success of the Council. This occurred shortly before Pope Paul formally ratified the epochal Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy which was approved by the Council Fathers at the close of the second session. The third picture was taken in January as the Pope left Rome for his momentous pilgrimage to the Holy Land. He became the first pontiff to ever to travel by air and the first since St. Peter to set foot on soil hallowed by the footsteps of Christ. Above, the Kennedy brothers are shown as they presented a check for $1,178,000 to the then Archbishop Richard J. Cushing of Boston. The funds, from the Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Foundation, were used for four archdiocesan projects. The foundation was named for the President’s older brother Joseph, killed in World War II. In this photo, Ted Kennedy is at left, Robert at right. Below, the first Catholic president of the United States receives a gift from Pope Paul VI at Vatican City. The gift was a model of the Pieta, Michelangelo’s masterpiece which will be exhibited at the Vatican Pavilion during the New York World’s Fair. The Pope lauded Mr. Kennedy and the U.S. government for its efforts to promote racial equality. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-11E-63-W)

- Pope proposes Roman Curia reforms.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-29915 POPE PROPOSES ROMAN CURIA REFORMS VATICAN CITY -- Pope Paul VI gestures as he receives prelates and officials of the Roman Curia. In addressing them he proposed that the Church’s central administrative body be modernized for today’s age. Major reforms asked by the Pope included greater authority to diocesan bishops, who now must refer many matters to Rome; collaboration of bishops with the Pope in the “study and responsibility” of Church government; internationalization of Curia members, now predominantly Italian; and education of Curia personnel along more “ecumenical” lines. Coming a week before the opening of the Second Vatican Council’s second session, the Pope’s address to the Curia gave added significance to the first item on the Council’s agenda. This was entitled “Of the Church” and dealt mainly with relations between bishops and the Church in modern times. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-9D-63-NAB)
