- Cardinal visits Soldiers Home.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30812 CARDINAL VISITS SOLDIERS HOME CHELSEA, Mass. -- Richard Cardinal Cushing, Archbishop of Boston, while visiting war veterans at the Soldiers Home in Chelsea borrowed an expression from his Irish ancestors and “took to the bed.” Touring the hospital wards, the cardinal spied an empty bed and promptly climbed into it. He quipped as the patients roared with laughter: “I belong here and I may stay the night.” While on his rounds, Cardinal Cushing stopped to sing a duet with 72-year-old Jacob Mulsman, a Jewish veteran of World War I. “I’m celebrating Passover with the best Jew in Massachusetts,” the prelate remarked.
