- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30511 CARDINAL INTRODUCED AT METHODIST CHURCH SUDBURY, Mass. -- Seated with clergymen of the Sudbury (Mass.) Council of Churches, Richard Cardinal Cushing, Roman Catholic Archbishop of Boston, is shown as he was introduced to a large audience at the Sudbury Methodist Church. Cardinal Cushing (hand on chin) is introduced by the Rev. Blaine Taylor (standing) of the host congregation. In a 90-minute talk, followed by a half hour question-answer period, Cardinal Cushing recognized Protestantism's early start in ecumenism ("Catholics have a long way to catch up"), held that the "spirit of the scholars" must reach the grassroots level if the ecumenical movement is to advance, and foresaw "unity of the spirit," not union, in this century. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-32203 NEW CARDINAL PLEDGES OBEDIENCE VATICAN CITY -- Lawrence Cardinal Shehan, Archbishop of Baltimore, listens as Pope Paul VI reads the pledge of “loyalty, submission, obedience and perpetual collaboration” taken by the new cardinals at a public consistory. As the Pope read the pledge to the 26 new Princes of the Church present, each responded, “I promise.” The cardinal received their new scarlet birettas -- three-peaked clerical caps -- but the ritual of conferring the traditional galero, or Red Hat, was eliminated. The galeros, best known insignia of a cardinal, were delivered later to the prelates at their Rome residence. Cardinal Shehan was the only American prelate among the 27 new cardinals named by the Pope. One of them was not present at the public consistory, Angel Cardinal Herrera y Oria, Bishop of Malaga, Spain. He will receive his Red Hat from Generalissimo Franco.
