- First electric fixture in any church.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-31339 FIRST ELECTRIC FIXTURE IN ANY CHURCH ROSELLE, N.J. -- This is the first electric fixture installed in a church anywhere in the world. Thomas A. Edison called it an “electrolier” and in 1883 donated it to First Presbyterian church of Roselle, N.J., after convincing its pastor that it would not be “sacrilegious” to have electric lights in the sanctuary. The fixture is shown (left) after it was damaged in a 1949 fire that destroyed the church. The church was re-built, but the fixture remained in storage until about six months ago when it was restored (right) by Lightolier in Jersey City, N.J. Plans for its restoration were drawn up by Mayor Warren Stadden of Roselle, a practicing architect and engineer. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (L-7E-64-NAB)
