- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-32045 TEENAGERS ENTHUSIASTIC IN ANTI-POLIO CAMPAIGN (No. 3 in a series of 4 photos) NEWARK, N.J. -- Teenagers in a predominantly Negro-Puerto Rican section of Newark, N.J., at first laughed, then became enthusiastic participants in pilot program to induce residents to accept the Sabin oral vaccine against polio. The young people -- enlisted by clergymen and community leaders -- formed door-knocking teams, brought neighborhood gangs into the campaign and gave instructions to their parents, many of whom speak no English. Their efforts are depicted in a film being distributed by the U.S. Public Health Service, “To Open a Door,” as an aid to community leaders in their efforts to reach sections of the population who need encouragement before taking advantage of available drugs and vaccines. - Priest leads congregation to immunization center.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-32044 PRIEST LEADS CONGREGATION TO IMMUNIZATION CENTER (No. 2 in a series of 4 photos) NEWARK, N.J. -- The entire Spanish-speaking congregation of a Roman Catholic church in Newark, N.J., is led after Mass to a polio immunization center. The scene is in a film being distributed by the U.S. Public Health Service, “To Open a Door,” which was produced as an aid to community leaders in their efforts to get “unreachable” sections of the population to take advantage of available drugs and vaccines. Clergymen, who encouraged their own congregations -- and enlisted church members to spread the word -- were important participants in the program, which was called a success as 80 per cent of the Negro and Puerto Rican neighborhood received the polio vaccine. - Families visit mobile anti-polio bus.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-32046 FAMILIES VISIT MOBILE ANTI-POLIO BUS (No. 4 of a series of 4 photos) NEWARK, N.J. -- Nearly 80 per cent of a predominantly Negro-Puerto Rican section of Newark, N.J., took Sabin oral vaccine against polio as a result of a crash program to encourage acceptance of the medical help. The vaccine is administered here in a mobile bus, used to reach those who did not go to the immunization center. The special public information effort -- aided in large measure by the clergymen of the area -- is depicted in a film, “To Open a Door,” being distributed by the U.S. Public Health Service to help communities make the most effective use of available drugs and vaccines. - Churchmen play key role in health drive.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-32043 CHURCHMEN PLAY KEY ROLE IN HEALTH DRIVE (No. 1 in a series of 4 photos) NEWARK, N.J. -- Simply making drugs and vaccines available to the public often does not stimulate the desired response in areas most in need of mass immunization, public health officials have discovered. As part of a mounting campaign to reach people and let them know medical assistance is at hand, the U.S. Public Heath Service is distributing a film, “To Open a Door,” which chronicles methods employed in a largely Negro and Puerto Rican section of Newark, N.J., where a “crash program” was undertaken to induce residents to accept the Sabin oral vaccine against polio. Clergymen, like the Baptist minister shown here urging his church members to take the vaccine, played a key role in the project. Officials estimated that 80 per cent of an “almost unreachable” population received the vaccine. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (MWN-NY-1D-65-NBM)

- Jeweled cross by Dali.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-31996 JEWELED CROSS BY DALI NEWARK, N.J. -- This unusual jeweled “Angel Cross” was one of about 30 artistic creations by Salvador Dali displayed in a Newark, N.J., department store for charity. The Dali exhibition of works of art in gems and precious metals was valued at about $2 million. This cross, 30 inches high, rests on a crystalized zinc sulphite base, in which are embedded 12 diamond-encrusted spines, a symbol of the Twelve Apostles. Used in creating the cross were diamonds, platinum, gold, lapis lazuli from Russia, and rare dark coral from China. It also had a flawless topaz from Brazil weighing 1,687 karats, which represents the door of the Tabernacle and the Gate of Heaven.
