- Church will stand as memorial to Churchill.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30900 CHURCH WILL STAND AS MEMORIAL TO CHURCHILL FULTON, Mo. -- Former President Harry S. Truman led dignitaries in groundbreaking ceremonies at Fulton, Mo., for an American memorial to Sir Winston Churchill, who delivered his famous “Iron Curtain” speech there on March 5, 1946. The memorial will be the reconstructed Church of St. Mary Aldermanbury, bombed in London in World War II. It will be moved stone-by-stone and rebuilt on the campus of Westminster College, Presbyterian men’s school where the former British Prime Minister delivered his speech. Looking at a model of the church with Mr. Truman are Robert L.D. Davidson (center), president of Westminster College, and Lord Harlech, British Ambassador to the United States. - Methodist protest at GOP headquarters.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-31753 METHODISTS PROTEST AT GOP HEADQUARTERS KANSAS CITY -- Banners carried by some 80 Methodist clergymen and ministerial students protest the sale at Republican campaign headquarters in Kansas City, Mo., of a book they contend is a “smear” attack on their denomination and other Churches. The book, “None Dare Call it Treason,” by John Stormer, a Missouri Republican, alleges widespread Communist infiltration in many facets of American life. A National Council of Churches publication and religious leaders elsewhere have charged that the book is poorly documented and uses much material out of original context. - Empty chairs at Concordia opening.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-45999 EMPTY CHAIRS AT CONCORDIA OPENING ST. LOUIS -- Chairs which last year held faculty members stand empty during services opening the 136th academic year at Concordia Theological Seminary in St. Louis. Concordia, the largest Lutheran seminary in North America a year ago, is now the smallest seminary of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. Fall enrollments for the Synod’s Concordia Seminary in Springfield, Ill., and for St. Louis’ Seminex, known as “Concordia Seminary in Exile,” will both be more than double that of Concordia in St. Louis. Seminex was created last February after Dr. John Tietjen was suspended as president of Concordia and most of the 450 resident students and more than 40 faculty members declared a moratorium on classes to protest the suspension. The striking faculty were dismissed and they and the dissenting students set up Seminex. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (A-SL-9B-74-DS)
