- Catholic students hear Billy Graham.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30289 CATHOLIC STUDENTS HEAR BILLY GRAHAM BELMONT, N.C. -- Evangelist Billy Graham is obviously having an enjoyable time as he is interviewed by students of Belmont Abbey College, a Roman Catholic institution at Belmont, N.C. With him is the Very Rev. John Oetgen, O.S.B., president. The Southern Baptist clergyman addressed 1,200 students who gave him a standing ovation. It was his first address at a Catholic institution. Father Oetgen said Belmont Abbey had been praised for inviting the evangelist -- “but after hearing Dr. Graham, I think instead of praise we should have been blamed for having waited so long.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (FRE-NC-11E-63-W)

- Billy Graham at Catholic college.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30290 BILLY GRAHAM AT CATHOLIC COLLEGE BELMONT, N.C. -- “A high point of my career” is the way Evangelist Billy Graham described his first address before a Roman Catholic institution. Here, the Southern Baptist clergyman is shown with the Very Rev. John Oetgen, O.S.B., president of Belmont Abbey College. Twelve hundred students gave Dr. Graham an ovation on conclusion of his talk. He told them the Second Vatican Council provided for better interreligious understanding and promoted the “exchange of ideas and thoughts.” Father Oetgen said the Catholic college should not have been praised for inviting Dr. Graham -- “We should have been blamed for having waited so long.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (FRE-NC-11E-63-W)

- First Negro Catholic in N.C. county.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30711 FIRST NEGRO CATHOLIC IN N.C. COUNTY WADESBORO, N.C. -- A happy day for what is regarded to be America's smallest parish. Miss Barbara Joan Clark, a student nurse, becomes the first Negro Catholic in Anson County, N.C., as she is baptized by Father Ambrose F. Rohrbacher, pastor of Sacred Heart Church, Wadesboro. Miss Clark, 20, chose St. Joan of Arc as her patron saint. Her sponsor is Mrs. Doria Foster Moore, who taught Barbara at the Lincoln Hospital Nursing School in Durham. Sacred Heart is the smallest parish in the least-Catholic state in the Union. It covers all of Anson County, which has a population of 24,962, of which 12,231 are Negroes. The county's Catholic population is 21 -- and Miss Clark was the 21st. Her baptism filled the church to capacity for the first time in its history -- largely with non-Catholic friends. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: RELIGION ON THE MOVE #3167 Shifting populations throughout the United States and Canada during the war years have made churchmen transportation conscious, and as a result they have turned to many different conveyances to bring God’s word to their flocks. This sea-going parson is the Rev. A. H. Marshall, of St. Phillips Protestant Episcopal church, Southport, N.C. He is preaching from the deck of his boat to one of the 105 congregations scattered over hundreds of miles of inland waterway between the Virginia and South Carolina state lines. In bad weather the “congregation” adjourns to a nearby building, or, if the group is small enough, the cabin of the boat serves as a meeting place. - Fresco of pregnant Mary is artist's gift.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-46013 FRESCO OF PREGNANT MARY IS ARTIST’S GIFT WEST JEFFERSON, N.C. -- Artist Ben Long IV (left) transforms Luke 2:5 -- “Mary…Who was with child” -- into a visual rarity as he executes a life-size fresco of the Virgin Mary about eight months pregnant with the assistance of the Rev. J. Faulton Hodge. The fresco, which was painted into fresh plaster in about four days, is the artist’s gift to St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, a 100-member parish with a rustic 19th century roadside church in western North Carolina near West Jefferson. The “cartoon,” or study of the fresco, is at left. Mr. Long first visited the tiny church about two years ago while home in Statesville, N.C., from Florence, Italy, where he is studying the art of fresco under Pietro Annigoni, a master in the art but best known for his oil portrait of Queen Elizabeth. Last summer the artist offered to do a fresco for the church but Father Hodge, the vicar of St. Mary’s, admitted the parish could not pay for such a work of art. Mr. Long said it would be his gift and this summer he said he was ready to begin. The subject first selected was St. John the Baptist. But Father Hodge, in an effort to stir Mr. Long’s imagination, suggested a pregnant Virgin Mary, a rare sight in art history. The idea caught on because Mr. Long’s wife, Diane, was pregnant and she served as the model for the figure. The work, which was dedicated in early September, has Mary standing, turned slightly to the left. Her left hand is raised in a spiritual gesture. Her right arm cradles the unborn child. An eclipse signals the coming event. Next Summer Mr. Long will do a fresco of St. John for the church. He is now back in Italy where he is painting a fresco for a Franciscan monastery at Monte Catini, Termi. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO by Frank Jones (FJ-WS-9B-74-DS)
