- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: CONGRESS BEGINS WITH PRAYER #4973 WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Dr. James Shera Montgomery, chaplain of the House of Representatives, begins the 80th session of the lower house by leading the Representatives in prayer. Though House rules provide that a new chaplain may be selected every two years, Dr. Montgomery has filled the post for the past 26 years largely because, observers say, he is a favorite with both political parties. As chaplain, he is called on to begin each House session with prayer. Other duties include: marrying Congressmen and members of their families, baptizing their children, and officiating at government ceremonies.
