- Life in a Capuchin monastery.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-3926 LIFE IN A CAPUCHIN MONASTERY [1] STAUNTON, Va. -- The rapid pace of the Twentieth Century gives way to study, mediation, prayer and work at Our Lady of Angels Capuchin monastery here. The basis of living is reduced to its essentials, as shown in this photo of the plainly-set table at meal time. Seating at long wooden tables is arranged by rank. Much modern equipment has been installed in the monastery and its grounds. Cells are equipped with hot and cold water, and tilling of the soil is done by power-driven plows. Students do most of work, and the building contains carpenter, cobbler, pressing and tailor shops. (One of a series) Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (AC-RICH-VA-MES-6B-6-C-R)

However all is not done without recreation, as this picture shows. Longest period of relaxation is the hour after night prayers when the 24 students and six priest-teachers play cards, read and listen to the radio or play table tennis. Members of the order may leave the grounds of the monastery only on Thursday, except on monastery business or to visit the doctor or dentist. Off the grounds they dress in black suits. Returning from service, the men were dismayed to find that their old Sunday school classes had disbanded, and decided “it’s about time somebody rehabilitates the folks back home.” Operating as two-man teams they intend to visit more than 600 families in this city. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: OLDEST LIVING MISSIONARY #4877 HAMPTON, Va. -- Mrs. Harriet C. Stevens, oldest living missionary, celebrates her 105th birthday in the company of a young neighbor, Judith Evans, who reached her fifth birthday the same day. Mrs. Stevens, whose excellent health astonishes physicians, is still actively concerned with the crusade for peace through religion. She was born in Burma, the daughter of missionaries, and at 23 married a missionary. Her interest in Burma led her to translate references from the English Bible into Burmese, an arduous task that took 10 years to complete. She also founded the first school for Burmese women. A graduate of Bucknell College, class of 1858, she was cited for her achievements as an educator and missionary worker when that institution recently held its centennial celebration. Dols, Jr., rector of Immanuel Church-on-the-Hill, and the Rev. Patricia Park, assistant rector, after attending services at the Alexandria, Va., Episcopal church two days after he was sworn in as the natin’s 38th Chief Executive. Mr. Ford was accompanied by his wife, Betty, and their 17-year-old daughter, Susan, as they attended the church, where they have been worshipping since 1955. They heard a special prayer for the new President, a prayer for former President Richard M. Nixon and his family, and a sermon in which the rector called for “picking u the broken pieces” and awakening like Lazarus of the New Testament story to “a new day filled with other possibilities.” The liturgy was conducted by Mrs. Park, who is a deacon and the wife of an Episcopal priest. She also read the prayers for the new President and for the Nixons. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (A-WAS-8C-74-DS)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-46268 KEEPING FIT HAMPTON, Va. -- Evangelist Billy Graham (left) and his music director, Cliff Barrows, relax on a dock near the Hampton Roads Coliseum, catching their breath following a short run. The two men had broken away from the routine of readying for Mr. Graham’s recent Tidewater Crusade to get some exercise. “I run practically ever day,” the evangelist said as he patted the rock-hard muscles of his leg. The running has also taken off inches from his waist -- four to be exact. Mr. Graham commented that he used to run a mile and a half each day. But following a slight heart disorder a couple of years ago -- blockage of a nerve bundle to the right of his heart -- doctors told him to cut back slightly on the exercise. “I’ll run now, I guess, about a quarter of a mile to a half mile per day.” He added that he also swims whenever he can. Mr. Graham, who is 56, said that at one time, he played golf a great deal -- with an average running score in the low 80s -- but he hardly plays anymore. “It got so it takes so long to play, and it’s so expensive. So, I just run now. It doesn’t cost me anything and I can do it anytime that I’ve got the time.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (EB-VA-11C-74-DS)
