- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: BAPTIST RETIRE CHAPEL CAR #S-3420 CHICAGO, Ill. -- Chicago’s Baptists have bidden farewell to one of the last vestiges of a vanishing era in American life--a “chapel” car. A historic relic of Frontier Christianity, the “church on wheels” owned by the Northern Baptist Convention was on exhibition here before making its last trip to the convention’s assembly ground at Green Lake, Wisconsin. Known as “Grace” the car contained pulpit, organ, pews for 65 worshippers and a three-room apartment for the minister and his family. FRANCES XAVIER CABRINI CHICAGO -- Roman Catholic chaplains of World War II ascend the altar at Soldiers Field, here, to offer special prayers to St. Frances Xavier Cabrini before an illuminated 75-foot portrait of the recently canonized saint. The procession was one of many that featured a colorful religious pageant sponsored by the Holy Name Union of the archdiocese of Chicago, to pay homage to the Italian-born nun who became America's first saint. The pageant, sponsored by the Holy Name Union of the archdiocese of Chicago, also featured a living portrayal of the map of the United States with several girls dressed as Mother Cabrini and nuns of her order moving from place to place, dramatizing the way she traveled extensively in pursuit of her labors. Another group of 2,000 girls portrayed a living rosary. Cardinal Stritch, speaking from an altar dominated by a 75-foot painting of Mother Cabrini, lauded the virtues of the Italian-born nun who became the first American saint.
