- Cardinal's efforts for Israel disclosed.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31005 CARDINAL’S EFFORTS FOR ISRAEL DISCLOSED NEW YORK -- For the first time it was revealed that Francis Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of New York (left), had a part in the admission of Israel to the United Nations in 1949. The disclosure was made by Charles H. Silver, president of Beth Israel Hospital (right), in introducing the cardinal at the hospital’s 75th anniversary dinner. With them is Mayor Robert F. Wagner. Mr. Silver reported that Cardinal Spellman contacted a number of South American countries in support of Israel’s entry into the U. N. These contacts, Mr. Silver said, were instrumental in the General Assembly approving the new nation’s membership. He added that the prelate’s assistance made “one of the most amazing stories of brotherhood and fellowship among men of good will.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BB-NY-5C-64-NAB)

- CYO cites Bob Hope.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-32141 CYO CITES BOB HOPE NEW YORK -- Bob Hope, noted TV comedian (right), receives the 1964 Club of Champions Medal presented by the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) of New York for “dedication and service to the youth of America and particularly to the U.S. armed forces.” Presentation was made by Francis Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of New York, at the CYO’s annual dinner. Shown with them is J. Peter Grace, CYO president. The citation to Mr. Hope noted that he has made annual Christmas tours of military bases overseas with an entertainment group. He was in South Vietnam at Christmas. The irrepressible comedian told the audience Cardinal Spellman had visited all the fighting fronts -- “Korea, South Vietnam…and the World’s Fair.” He added that he appreciated the friendship and goodwill of Catholics -- “I have to do a lot of flying…and they’ve got good connections.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BB-NY-2B-65-NAB)

- South Vietnamese archbishop visits New York.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-29882 SOUTH VIETNAMESE ARCHBISHOP VISITS NEW YORK NEW YORK -- Archbishop Pierre Martin Ngo Dinh Thuc of Hue, brother of the president of South Vietnam, Ngo Dinh Diem, arrives in New York for a one-day visit with Auxiliary Bishop Fulton J. Sheen of New York and discussion with the press on the crisis in his country. The 66-year-old archbishop firmly denied the Roman Catholic Church is involved in alleged persecution of Buddhists, maintaining that Communists and other agitators are using the situation to their advantage. He disclaimed reports that his visit had political implications or that he was seeking U.S. Catholic hierarchy intervention with U.S. governmental authorities to ease relations with the Diem regime. His talk with Bishop Sheen, he said, was confined to missionary matters. The South Vietnamese archbishop was unable to meet with Francis Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of New York, who was out of the city. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (PA-NY-9B-63-NBM)
