Description

Text transcribed from caption: #4794 PLEADS FOR CHURCH AID TO CHINA GALVESTON, Tex. -- “People in my diocese are actually eating grass, wild flowers and the bark from trees,” the Rt. Rev. Quentin K.Y. Huang (above), Protestant Episcopal Bishop of Kunming, China, told parishioners of the Grace Episcopal Church here. He is presently touring the United States seeking church assistance for famine-stricken areas in his country that are suffering from the ravages of eight war years. During the war, in which he directed an ambulance corps while surviving 265 bombings, the Bishop befriended many American soldiers. They came to know him as the “Bishop of Burma Road.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (NM-GAL-BS-11B6-A-E)

Text transcribed from caption: OLDEST LIVING MISSIONARY #4877 HAMPTON, Va. -- Mrs. Harriet C. Stevens, oldest living missionary, celebrates her 105th birthday in the company of a young neighbor, Judith Evans, who reached her fifth birthday the same day. Mrs. Stevens, whose excellent health astonishes physicians, is still actively concerned with the crusade for peace through religion. She was born in Burma, the daughter of missionaries, and at 23 married a missionary. Her interest in Burma led her to translate references from the English Bible into Burmese, an arduous task that took 10 years to complete. She also founded the first school for Burmese women. A graduate of Bucknell College, class of 1858, she was cited for her achievements as an educator and missionary worker when that institution recently held its centennial celebration. Bishop Oxnam addresses reformation rally.

Description

Text transcribed from caption: BISHOP OXNAM ADDRESSES REFORMATION RALLY #S-4708 CLEVELAND -- Methodist Bishop G. Bromley Oxnam of New York, president of the Federal Council of Churches, delivers the keynote address at a Protestant Festival of Faith held here to commemorate Reformation Week. The bishop warned an audience of 12,000 assembled in Public Hall that force might postpone war but it would not create a permanent peace. “Atomic bombs and other weapons can, if we are successful, defeat the masses who fight for Russia,” he said. “But they cannot eradicate materialistic philosophy. That can be beaten only by a dynamic faith of Christ.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (G-CPD-CLEV-BS-10E-6-W)

Description

Text transcribed from caption: PASSIONIST NUNS OPEN NEW CONVENT #C-4815 SCRANTON, Pa. -- Here is an unusual photograph of five sisters of the Passionist Order, taken as they leave their convent here to journey to Owensboro, Ky., where they will open a new one -- the order’s third in the United States. Because they voluntarily seclude themselves from worldly affairs and take vows of enclosure which confine them to the convent except in case of severe illness or as in this instance, to further the work of the order, Passionist nuns are rarely photographed. They speak to each other only during meals, occupy their time with work, spiritual readings and prayer. Mother Mary Agnes (center), a member of the order for 33 years, is Mother Superior of the new Owensboro group. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (JG-OLYPH-PA-BS-11C-6-C)
